Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 1

The bylaws of the organization include a provision for the Board of Directors to designate from among its members an Executive Committee consisting of three or more directors, which number shall always include the Founding Directors and the Chairman. The Committee has the authority to act on behalf of the Board in the normal course of business between regular meetings of the Board and as authority with respect to extraordinary transactions as the Board delegates.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 2

George Greene III, CEO; Molly Greene, Board Chair; and Robert Greene, Director - Family Relationship George Greene III, CEO; Molly Greene, Board Chair; and George Greene IV, President & COO - Family Relationship

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11

Form 990 is prepared by an independent CPA firm and reviewed in detail by the top financial officials and top management officials of the organization. The reviewed Form 990 is then forwarded to the organization's audit committee and forwarded to all board members prior to filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12C

Conflict of interest disclosure statements are completed annually in September by Water Missions representatives, including but not restricted to, officers and board members who represent the ministry. The Treasurer is responsible for ensuring that all forms are completed, and the finance and audit committee review the completed disclosure statements as part of their scheduled monitoring process. If a matter related to a potential conflict were to arise at a board meeting, the interested person would abstain from voting on matters related to the noted conflict.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15

The compensation for all persons listed in Part VII, Section A, is set by committees that exclude all people with whom the employee has family or business relationships. The committees use benchmark data from other non-profits and local for-profit companies. The approved compensation packages are documented via personnel records and the annual budgeting process.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

The organization provides governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements to the public either on its website or upon request.

Financial Statement Notes

Part X, Line 2:

The financial statement effects of a tax position taken or expected to be taken are recognized in the consolidated financial statements when it is more likely than not, based on the technical merits, that the position will be sustained upon examination. Interest and penalties, if any, are included in expenses in the consolidated statements of activities. As of September 30, 2014, WMI had no uncertain tax positions that qualify for recognition or disclosure in the consolidated financial statements. WMI files information tax returns in the U.S. and various states. WMI is generally no longer subject to U.S. federal and state income tax examinations by tax authorities for years before 2009.

IRS990/Desc0Community Development:Water Missions International (WMI) is a nonprofit Christian engineering organization providing sustainable safe water and sanitation solutions for people in developing countries and disaster areas. Using state-of-the-art technology and engineering expertise, the organization has provided access to safe water for more than 2.5 million people in 50 countries on five continents since 2001. Water Missions International implements customized solutions through a comprehensive community development model in its 10 permanent country programs in Africa, Asia, Central America and South America. (Continued under "Community Development" in Schedule O).Community Development, continued:WMI takes a comprehensive approach to combating the global water crisis by designing customized, sustainable safe water and sanitation solutions to meet the needs of entire communities. WMI's methodology is centered around community ownership and therefore, partners with the recipients throughout the process of installing and implementing the solution. This model includes the establishment of a Safe Water Committee, financial management training, and promotion of healthy water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) behavior. After the solution has been implemented, WMI provides follow-up monitoring and support to ensure the project's success and sustainability. In 2014 Water Missions International: * Installed over 130 safe water projects providing access for 325,000 people. * Installed over 650 Healthy Latrines[TM] providing 3,250 people with access to improved sanitation. * Maintained over 500 active projects in various stages including assessment, design, implementation and follow-up support. In 2014 WMI moved the country programs to controlled affiliates. As a result of this change, funding for the country programs is shown as grant expense on the Statement of Functional Expenses.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Disaster Response: WMI was born out of the need for safe water as a result of the devastation in Honduras caused by Hurricane Mitch. The Living Water[TM] Treatment System (LWTS[TM]), first designed by WMI's co-founder, Dr. George Greene III, P.E. and constructed by a team of volunteers in 1998, is a miniature water treatment plant that utilizes rapid sand filtration and chemical disinfection for the production of safe drinking water. The LWTS[TM] has been refined over the years and has played a key role in providing relief following some of the world's most devastating disasters. (Continued under "Disaster Response" in Schedule O).Disaster Response, continued:In the last 13 years, WMI has provided approximately 1 million people with access to safe water following a disaster or emergency situation. During WMI's 2014 fiscal year (Oct. 2013 - Sept. 2014) the organization provided relief through safe water to people suffering as a result of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, Hurricane Tomas in St. Lucia, internally displaced people in South Sudan, people at risk of contracting cholera during an outbreak in Uganda, and those suffering as a result of the Ebola epidemic in Liberia.Although the Ebola epidemic in Liberia differed from other disasters to which WMI has responded in the past, the critical need for safe water was just as great. As the number of hospitals and Ebola Treatment Units (ETUs) in Liberia rapidly expanded to meet the escalating needs for the treatment of Ebola patients, there was a pervasive need for clean, safe, chlorinated water. WMI responded to the need in Liberia, which is the 50th country in which WMI has worked outside of the United States. WMI sent staff as well as water treatment equipment capable of providing safe water for up to 100,000 people. The first LWTS[TM] was installed in Dolo-Town, a community hard-hit by Ebola. WMI also worked to provide safe chlorinated water to a number of ETUs and hospitals in Liberia. It is WMI's goal to transition all disaster initiatives to sustainable safe water projects. This transition is currently occurring in communities across the Philippines. WMI launched an expansive emergency response following Typhoon Haiyan in November 2013 and since then has provided safe drinking water to approximately 130,000 people on a daily basis. WMI is currently working with people in these communities to help them learn how to sustainably and independently manage and maintain the safe water systems to ensure they will have access to safe water for generations to come.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Engineering Innovation:WMI currently has 13 licensed professional engineers working at international headquarters and abroad that assist 134 permanent in-country staff with assessing needs, designing solutions and managing project implementations. WMI continues to utilize the latest technology and engage experts in the field to push the boundaries on expanding the organization's engineering capabilities. One example is WMI's implementation of a customized, solar-powered pumping solution in one of the most remote areas of the world - Mount Paka, Kenya, a project that took two-and-a half years to design and implement. (Continued under "Engineering Innovation" in Schedule O).Engineering Innovation, continued:WMI engaged a volunteer, Dr. John Lane, Chief of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Office of Groundwater, Branch of Geophysics, to identify the best location for drilling a new borehole, after the initial attempt failed. Dr. Lane's recommended location for a second drilling attempt resulted in finding water at a depth of 650 feet below the earth's surface. An additional challenge, geothermal activity in the area, resulted in elevated water temperatures (100 degrees Fahrenheit). Because of the depth and high temperature of the water, the typical pumping systems utilized by our engineers would not work. WMI turned to Grundfos, a strategic partner, for a solution. As a leader in pumping technology, Grundfos developed a custom pumping system that could run off of solar power and handle the increased water temperature. The project utilized the most solar panels ever installed on a single WMI project, a custom-designed pump, and world-class technical knowledge - all for one of the most remote regions in Kenya.Another example of utilizing the latest technology in the field is WMI's use of remote monitoring as an innovative method for ensuring that systems implemented are continuing to supply safe water. Using mobile phones and satellite technology, WMI is able to monitor water consumption and other key performance indicators at projects in the most remote areas of the world from international headquarters. Additionally, in order to facilitate the flow of information and overcome the bottleneck associated with low-bandwidth connections, common in developing countries, WMI staff use iPads to document progress in communities, record data, and file electronic paperwork all in one place. Upon entering a Wi-Fi network, the files are automatically uploaded to WMI's reporting database. This efficiency minimizes time spent collecting and submitting information to WMI's international headquarters. From the data collected through remote monitoring and uploaded documents, project engineers can tell how many people are using water from the system, as well as whether or not the water meets the standards necessary to be classified as safe for human consumption. This allows for necessary adjustments and continuous improvements to be made.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0Health Impact Research:In 2014, Water Missions International expanded the Department of Health Impact Studies, which takes an innovative approach to conducting research on the impact that safe water and sanitation interventions have on public health in the community. In 2006, WMI received a grant from the Pentair Foundation to fund Safe Water Colon, a massive project providing safe water and sanitation systems to people across the district of Colon, Honduras. The project also included a health impact study that was done in 2009 demonstrating an approximate 54 percent reduction of clinical visits for diarrheal diseases in the 34 months after a community water system became fully operational. A follow up study, also funded by the Pentair Foundation, is currently underway. The follow-up study, which is expected to be completed in 2015, is intended to confirm that the pediatric diarrhea rates as well as the infant mortality rates of the region were greatly reduced by the water and sanitation project.Advocacy:One of Water Missions International's largest events for raising awareness about the global water crisis is our annual Walk for Water. The walk - hosted in Charleston, South Carolina - simulates the walk that millions of women and children make each day to collect contaminated water. In 2014, WMI hosted the largest walk in the organization's history with over 3,500 participants collectively walking over 11,000 miles benefitting people all over the world. Supporters outside of Charleston can also take part in ending the global water crisis by participating in WMI's Walk in a Bucket [TM] initiative. This program provides the materials and support to individuals and groups to hold their own Walk for Water events. In 2014, 25 walks were held around the world to raise awareness of the global water crisis. Water Missions International's Educators Think Tank program is a volunteer-led group of current and former educators who create lesson plans, implement educational activities, participate in science and math festivals, provide tours and programs for students, and run a water-related educational website for students around the country. The program has now seen thousands of students participate through the Lessons in a Bucket initiative, tours and/or presentations.
