Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To be a best in class Christian engineering ministry that transforms lives through sustainable safe water solutions.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Development and Engineering: Whenever possible, Water Missions International utilizes solar power for the solutions we implement. This is made possible by our strategic relationship with SolarWorld. Water Missions International's eMpower initiative (eMpower = solar energy charging Mobile phones) was implemented in 2012. This technology enables communities to generate supplementary income through mobile phone charging stations for community-owned water solutions. When water use in a community is low, water collection fees alone are often not sufficient to cover the ongoing maintenance and operation costs of the safe water solution. The additional revenue stream generated by eMpower can be critical to a project's financial viability. In 2012, eMpower was implemented in Haiti, Honduras, and Uganda. On September 25, 2012, George and Molly Greene, founders of Water Missions International, accepted the SolarWorld Einstein Award. They are the first Americans to receive the award. The Einstein Award is presented to individuals for solar power use and innovation in their sector. Previous winners include 2010 Nobel Prize winner Prof. Muhammed Yunus, inventor of micro-credit, and Spanish photovoltaic pioneer Prof. Antonio Luque-Lopez.
Activity 3
Disaster Response: In fiscal year 2012, Water Missions International responded to flooding in Honduras, drought relief in Kenya, and flooding in Peru. It is the goal and mission of Water Missions International to transition all disaster response operations to long-term safe water projects that include community development. This was a significant focus for our Haiti country program in 2012.

IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0Advocacy: The Educators' Think Tank, a volunteer-led group of current and former educators developed lesson plans, entitled Lessons in a Bucket, focusing on teaching children from Kindergarten through 6th grade about the importance of safe water worldwide. Lessons in a Bucket uses innovative teaching methods to educate children about the global need for safe water, the science behind delivering safe water to a community, the importance of water conservation and dozens of other topics. In 2012, the program was piloted in ten Charleston, South Carolina-area classrooms and the Department of Teacher Education correlated Lessons in a Bucket to meet SC Curriculum Standards as well as the Common Core Curriculum Standards. The intention is to expand the program regionally in 2013. In 2012, the Walk in a Bucket initiative-a program that empowers individuals to plan their own Walk for Water event-funded safe water projects in Haiti and Kenya. A Walk for Water event mimics the walk that millions of people take each day to collect water, as organizers invite participants to experience this reality by carrying buckets of water along a planned route for the event. Since the program's inception in 2011, 14 million steps have been taken, providing safe water for more than 19,000 people around the world.

IRS990/Description0Community Development: In 2012, Water Missions International provided 242,000 people safe water access through the implementation of 121 safe water projects in Haiti (23), Honduras (39), Belize (7), Mexico (5), Peru (12), Malawi (16), Uganda (9), Kenya (7), and Tanzania (3). When we bring safe water to a community, we deliver comprehensive solutions to ensure the long-term sustainability of the project. Water Missions International has cultivated a community development model as part of our comprehensive solution to ensure that projects do not fail due to a community's lack of adequate training, preparation, or support. Our model includes the establishment of a Safe Water Committee, financial management training, and promotion of healthy water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) behavior. As the initial step in a safe water project, our team works with local leaders, assesses the needs of the community, and then begins preparing the people for the transformational power of safe water. After the solution has been implemented, Water Missions International provides needed support and follow-up monitoring to ensure the project's success and sustainability. Water Missions International has begun implementation of a new community development model called TradeWater for several of our projects. TradeWater is a nonprofit program designed to transform and sustain the flow of safe water in developing countries, specifically in communities where local ownership/leadership infrastructures cannot sustain a community-owned solution. With the TradeWater model, Water Missions International hires someone from the local community to manage the operation, maintenance, and business aspects of the water solution. In addition, we often utilize innovative technology that collects water use data, captures income transactions and transmits this data back to our server at the Water Missions International headquarters in Charleston, South Carolina. This data helps our technical staff evaluate the effectiveness and sustainability of the project as well as aiding in the continuing developing of best practices for our work in all communities. Beyond providing access to safe water, Water Missions International is committed to providing access to the Living Water message. We believe that we are directed to conduct ourselves in a manner that causes others to notice something pleasantly different about us. Through our staff presence, our partnerships with local churches, and our work in the community, we connect the activity of our water projects to God's work in the community. Through these channels, those we serve have the opportunity to learn about Jesus-the true Living Water.
