IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom0100 -BIA Work with the Native FireSafe Councils and Wildfire Awareness and Preparedness Outreach on the Reservations: a.New FireSafe Council was formed on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation with the help of the Bureau of Indian Affairs Prevention and Education Officers. b Northern Cheyenne had a tremendous fire season. FireSafe Montana worked with the Fire Prevention and Education Officer with public messaging and outreach. FireSafe Montana provided 350+ Living with Fire Brochures, worked with Ready. Gov to provide over 300 Emergency Preparedness Bags with hand sanitizer, brief emergency preparedness and wildfire awareness mailers (350+), and worked with Northern Rockies Fire Prevention and Education to make targeted banners for both the Northern Cheyenne and the Crow Nation. c.Provided the Crow Nation with 350+ plus Living with Fire and wildfire awareness mailers that were partially translated into Crow Language. Provided outreach materials for the Crow Fair. Largest gathering of Native Americans in Montana. d.Held a Wildfire Awareness Event in Browning, MT with over 300+ attendees. Organized in conjunction with the Housing Authority, Glacier FireSafe Council, and the City of Browning. e.Co-hosted an evening Wildfire Awareness Event with the Flathead FireSafe Council. Evening event focused on Native American Fire Use and Traditional Knowledge and how that plays into current fire behavior.
IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom1Outreach, Education, and Collaboration: FireSafe Montana reaches its outreach, education and collaboration objectives through organizing one day homeowner workshops across the state, state wide media campaigns in collaboration with Keep Montana Green, the FireSafe Montana website, and attending community events with our large FireSafe Montana display. a. Communities and Wildfire Workshop series: 1. Three one day workshops were held in Miles City, Columbus, and Polson. Each of these locations addressed unique issues, fire behavior, and public audience. We were able to reach out to 36, 72, and 123 respectively. Although, our attendance was not great in numbers, each workshop brought many different local agencies and stakeholders together to discuss their programs. In order to make the workshops as relevant to the local population as possible, FireSafe Montana reached out to multiple organizations that have landowner grants for various practices in each area (i.e. Agricultural Water Enhancement Program (AWEP), Conservation Innovation Grants (CIG), Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP), Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program (FRPP), hazardous fuels reduction, and forest stewardship programs). Bringing the experts of these different programs together to discuss how they can work in concert with each other to help meet multiple objectives, utilize public dollars more efficiently, and build stronger inter-agency and public relationships was a key indirect outcome of the workshops across the state. Established working relationships are very important when there is an emergency, no time is wasted having to build communication networks among agencies and the public. i. Some of the topics for the workshop included: Fire Around Homes: Case studies from Montana, Successes and Failures, Traditional Fire Use Practices, Social Aspects of Wildfire Preparedness, Lessons to Take to Heart, the Benefits of Forest Management in Eastern Montana: Increased forest production, management flexibility, water yield, and reduced fire hazard, Rangeland Fire Behavior: Fire on the range landscape. The effects from Prescribed and Wildfire in the grassland and Ponderosa pine forests. b. Community Wildfire Awareness Month i. FireSafe Montana spearheaded a coalition to join a multi-state proclamation with Idaho, Nevada, and Oregon to declare May as Wildfire Awareness Month. Montana decided to declare June as wildfire awareness month. FireSafe Montana helped coordinate 15 wildfire awareness and preparedness events across the state through May and June events ranged from 20 homeowners to several hundred. FireSafe Montana gave presentations during 6 of the events on Evacuation Safety and our video 1/3 Mile to Safety. c. Outreach and Education (other than website, media outreach, and workshops) i. FireSafe Montana shipped 17 boxes of Living with Fire to 10 fire departments across the state for a total of 5950 booklets distributed. ii. We presented at 15 homeowners association and community groups, 3 After Fire Workshops with MSU Extension, 2 state wide insurance yearly agent meetings, Governor's Fire Briefing, Western County Fair, and others. d. Website: according to google analytics we have an average of 300 unique visits a month to our website. i. Website address was used throughout the fire season on inci- web, 7 billboards on main highways and was added in fire information material across the state.
IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom2FireSafe Council Support and New Additions a. Two new councils were started this year: The Ravalli County WUI Task Force and the Northern Cheyenne FireSafe Council. b. Councils worked hard to help plan and implement all four Communities and Wildfire Workshops across the state.
IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom3Volunteer Fire Department Hazard Assessment Program. a. Volunteer Fire Department Hazard Assessment Program. FireSafe Montana is in the second year of managing two Counties Hazard Assessment Program. Over 700 assessments have been completed in the two county area. Each county is using the Assessments to update their Community Wildfire Protection Plans and Population Protection Plans.
