IRS990/Desc0AIM at Melanoma is engaged in a wide variety of patient advocacy initiatives. Among these is the building and maintenance of the most comprehensive melanoma website (www.AIMatMelanoma.org) melanoma website. This website has also been launched as a country specific fully translated website in Germany, France, UK, Spain, Italy, and Australia. It has more than 40,000 unique visitors per month. It is updated for medical accuracy on a regular basis and serves as a source of information for patients, caregivers, and family worldwide. AIM also maintains a FB page with more than 17,000 followers in order to provide another source of information for the melanoma community.AIM runs numerous patient advocacy events, including patient symposiums led by nationally recognized melanoma oncologist, support groups for patients, families, and survivors, and provides a nurse on call service for melanoma patients. AIM's patient advocacy is a global effort, with AIM creating, supporting, and mentoring patient advocacy groups in Latin America, Brazil, UK, Portugal, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. AIM also leads the way by representing patients on the FDA ODAK committee, the two largest US cooperative oncology groups, SWOG and ECOG, the Melanoma World Society, and participating in numerous meetings both in the US and around the world. The International Melanoma Working Group (IMWG) was organized in April 2006. It was based on the premise that this disease required a focused, multi-disciplinary effort, among the world's leading melanoma investigators. This new group would provide a think tank atmosphere for the world's leading melanoma experts to gather semi-annually, away from large meetings, the purpose of which was to provide for a better understanding of the biology of melanoma and to accelerate the quest for more effective therapies. This was the beginning of the IMWG.The IMWG identified the lack of resources for the acquisition of tissues as a major deficit in the field of melanoma, resulting in a lack of information regarding the basis of tumor progression, biological markers, and drug development. It has therefore undertaken several key work projects representing collaboration among the members, designed to strike at what they think are the key leverage points of the melanoma dilemma:Formation of a US and worldwide Melanoma Tissue Repository Network to facilitate the sharing of biologic material and the resulting informatics.Expansion of the Sentinel Node Procurement and Assessment Protocol to enable an in-depth assessment of the molecular profile and immunomodulation of melanoma.Collaboration on the expansion of the Melanoma Molecular Map Project through direct support for continual identification of new melanoma-specific targets and pathways. IMWG wishes to further enlarge this project by seeking research into the complex vulnerabilities and survival mechanisms of melanoma, by collecting findings of target and pathway interactions.Through these specific research endeavors, IMWG hopes to develop unique new insights that will accelerate the rational combination of promising therapeutic agents. Through scientific talents and tireless drive, IMWG wants to be the catalyst for the beginning of the end of the unforgiving burden on patients, families, and clinicians who battle melanoma every day.International Melanoma Tissue Bank Consortium (IMTBC)Participating BranchesOregon Health & Science University's Knight Cancer InstituteCalifornia Pacific Medical CenterNorthwestern University's Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer CenterUniversity of Pittsburgh Cancer InstituteInternational site TBDWHY is this bank needed? An International Melanoma Tissue Bank of annotated fresh frozen primary melanoma tissue is the fundamental research tool that does not exist yet for public or private research. Major advances, particularly within breast and prostate cancer, resulted from similar banks. Consequently, melanoma research lags significantly behind the progress
