Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Access Health Africa's medical service programming focuses on community-level interventions. Due to the decentralized nature of life in Malawi and the overburdened formal health sector, effective interventions happen at the community level - where Access Health Africa excels at working. AHA specializes in community level work, psychosocial support, building local capacity, providing direct services, and education. At the local level we focus on health knowledge, improving community structures and attitudes surrounding health, direct service delivery, and access to health services and care. Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Camp Hope works in collaboration with SeriousFun Children's Network and Baylor College of Medicine's Children's Foundation - Malawi to develop a unique program catered to the specific challenges selected HIV-positive youth face. The ultimate goal is to empower patients to lead their own self-care, while empowering their families to provide the support and guidance they need to be healthy and happy. Focus areas include understanding proper nutrition and food preparation, cleanliness and sanitation, decision making, understanding anti-retroviral therapy (ART), and learning helpful habits for drug adherence. These concepts are taught in creative and unique ways. Due to COVID-19, Camp Hope's programming switched from residential camps with follow-up sessions to virtual meetings and follow up conversations. Participant's guardians also participate in virtual meetings where they are exposed to complementary lessons and encouraged to support their child throughout the year. Through its blend of psychosocial support and traditional camp activities, Camp Hope enhances campers' adherence to treatment and encourages a mindset of possibility and optimism. Every aspect of the program is designed to inspire positivity and hope for their future by fostering resilience and providing a supportive community and positive role models. Youth Living with HIV in Malawi face significant challenges, including a lack of support networks, difficulty disclosing their status, isolation, widespread misinformation, trouble coping with their status, and stigma and discrimination. Camp Hope creates a positive experience where youth living with HIV are understood and accepted. Participants build independence, gain self-confidence, and become resilient individuals.$24,635$24,631
Surgical Camps provide a broad range of diagnoses, treatment, and surgical procedures to the people of Malawi. Volunteers and paid practitioners, including doctors, nurses, and ancillary support staff, provide acute care to a population of patients who would otherwise not have access to medical care due to high transportation costs and/or lack of knowledge or understanding of the system. Malawi has just one doctor per 50,000 people - one of the lowest levels in the world. Recent research found that there are only 37 working surgeons in Malawi, the population of which is estimated to be approximately 17 million people. That's nearly half a million people per one surgeon! In Surgical Camps, AHA staff work directly with rural healthcare providers to identify individuals waiting for surgeries. A primary goal of AHA is not only to address the immediate, acute health issues in Malawi but also to increase the capacity of the healthcare sector. While unable to be offered recently due to the pandemic, in the past, volunteers have also provided trainings to emergency room staff, community health workers, and medical students to increase local capacity.$22,170$22,168
Medical Sponsorships identify patients with complex medical diagnoses that are unable to be treated by their community health center due to the complexity of the case and treatment required. Many individuals with complex cases cannot access care due to high transportation costs, lack of understanding of the medical system, lack of funds for diagnostic tests and costs such as accommodations not covered by the public healthcare system, and lack of an advocate. AHA coordinates care for these patients and provides funds to ensure the patient, and a guardian if the patient is a minor, have everything they need to access quality care. Funds provided including funds to get to and from the treatment facility safely, nutritious food during one's stay at a medical facility, medical tests such as CT scans or bloodwork, etc that are not covered by the public healthcare system, and sometimes even basic necessities such as new clothes or shoes. Patients are supported through the entire process and AHA provides follow-up support to ensure the medical issue was fully resolved.$2,400$2,463
