Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Access Health Africa's medical service programming focuses on community-level interventions. Due to the decentralized nature of life in Malawi and the overburdened formal health sector, effective interventions happen at the community level - where Access Health Africa excels at working. AHA specializes in community level work, psychosocial support, building local capacity, providing direct services, and education. At the local level we focus on health knowledge, improving community structures and attitudes surrounding health, direct service delivery, and access to health services and care. IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom0The Outreach Through Education program conducted outreach projects providing life skills and health education training to 540 adolescents, and 43 teachers in eight communities. The activities of each outreach project were focused around health, social services, and education. Individuals and communities received educational programming on issues surrounding HIV/AIDS, health, the environment, and gender equality through interactive lessons in the classroom and outreach projects in community settings. Over 1,200 nutritious lunches were provided and eight trees were planted in four communities. World Camp also undertook an anti-retroviral education workshop for 70 students in another partner community. For 20 members of a partner community-based organization, World Camp led a workshop on preventing HIV stigma, how HIV affects the body, anti-retroviral therapy, and empowering art projects. In lieu of providing lunch to one school one day (because of a sudden change to the school schedule), World Camp provided 120 lunches to the Chisomo Street Shelter.
IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom1Camp Hope Malawi delivers high quality programming for HIV-positive youth, intertwining HIV/AIDS information and medical support with traditional camp activities. In partnership with SeriousFun Children's Network and Baylor College of Medicine, Malawi's Pediatric AIDS Initiative, Camp Hope began with one week of intensive staff training for 28 employees. 80 children attended camp the following week. Programming included transportation, meals, accommodation, medical staff support, camp activities, HIV education lessons. Following the week of camp, campers were enrolled in a five-month follow-up program, one of which occurred in this fiscal year. Follow-up sessions brought campers together on a monthly basis to continue to discuss unique issues campers face, provide space for bonds between campers to continue to grow, and offer further support from Camp Hope staff. The primary guardians of each camper were brought together, also, to provide them with support and information about their camper's needs and health.
IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom2World Camp Clubs provided support for after-school clubs in five of our partner communities. Clubs were designed to lengthen the school day and increase learning opportunity while also keeping youths involved in positive activities. World Camp Clubs focus on community improvement projects such as reforestation, planting fruit and vegetable gardens, presenting educational dramas, providing care for HIV-positive community members, and more. World Camp provided supervision and support to each Club by visiting on a monthly basis. Each group has a membership between 35 and 60, with a likely estimate of 300 youths involved. During this fiscal year, World Camp brought 18 student-elected leaders of each Club together in the month of January for a leadership training focused on roles and responsibilities. Nutritious snacks were provided for all participants. In April, 22 student leaders were brought together for a second leadership training in which experts in related fields were brought in to meet with smaller groups broken up by role - secretaries, treasurers, etc. Lunch was served to all participants. In late May, near the end of the school year, World Camp brought together all members of all five clubs for an end of the year celebration. This included community art projects, tabling by World Camp and other nonprofits working in the school district, netball and soccer tournaments, presentations by each club, and HIV and environmental education lessons. Approximately 200 students attended.
