Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Access Health Africa's medical service programming focuses on community-level interventions. Due to the decentralized nature of life in Malawi and the overburdened formal health sector, effective interventions happen at the community level - where Access Health Africa excels at working. AHA specializes in community level work, psychosocial support, building local capacity, providing direct services, and education. At the local level we focus on health knowledge, improving community structures and attitudes surrounding health, direct service delivery, and access to health services and care. Camp Hope-Malawi delivers high quality programming for youth living with HIV, combining HIV/AIDS education and medical support with traditional camp activities. In partnership with SeriousFun Children's Network and Baylor College of Medicine-Malawi's, World Camp began operating Camp Hope in 2011 with one week of camp serving 80 campers. In 2015, Camp Hope served 200 campers and had 53 staff members. Camp was operated in three separate sessions, serving 80 campers in Weeks 1 and 2 and 40 campers in Week 3. Prior to that there was an intensive on-site staff training for one week. Programming included transportation, meals, accommodation, medical staff support, camp activities, HIV education lessons. After the residential camp, the youth recruited from World Camp's partner communities were enrolled in an ongoing follow-up program that brings youth together on a monthly basis.$7,600$4,238
In 2015, World Camp undertook community-based HIV testing. These tests were carried out through funding from the Million Dollar Round Table Foundation. Testing was paired with counselling, public health information delivery, and activities intended to fight stigma - these included songs and testimonials by people openly living with HIV in partner communities. During the months of June and July, World Camp was able to provide 607 people with free, in-community HIV testing and counselling.$6,675$1,196
Camp Hope Follow-Up is in many ways its own program but serves youth that attended Camp Hope. On a monthly basis, youth recruited by World Camp to attend Camp Hope are brought back together to continue the learning and mentoring they received at Camp. Life skills as well as educational lessons build no those introduced at Camp. Importantly, the program also enables campers to continue to build relationships with their fellow campers who are facing similar challenges. In addition to the sessions for campers, World Camp holds sessions for the guardians of our campers. These sessions occur twice and are intended to provide the guardians a space to ask questions and bond. Additionally, guardians learn more about what their campers learned at Camp and report how their youth's behavior may have changed or improved since Camp.$2,400$2,329
World Camp Clubs are after-school clubs designed to increase leadership skills and analytical thinking among rural Malawian youth through lessons and activities designed to build knowledge around relevant health topics. World Camp supports Clubs in 11 schools in the Malikha Zone - a school zone in the Lilongwe Rural East area. This geographic area is the catchment zone in which we do all our community-based work and recruiting for Camp Hope. World Camp Clubs are a decentralized program in which World Camp trains one female and one male teacher at each school to be a faculty leader to their school's Club. These trainings include leadership skills, how to create a safe space, facilitation and more. On a monthly basis, World Camp brings all faculty leaders together for a training on what will be the health topic and lesson plans for the coming month. These topics are decided upon by the faculty as well as World Camp, with the intention of having relevant lessons delivered in a given month - for instance, water-borne illnesses are covered during the rainy season. Clubs build the capacity and skill set of students through activities such as planning community projects, in-Club debates, group work, and more. Club attendance fluctuates but we estimate 700 youth participate in the World Camp Club program each year.$2,206$1,664
While not an emergency response organization, the landmark floods that occurred in Malawi in January 2015 spurred World Camp to take action. Former volunteers and other contacts voiced an interest in supporting flood relief efforts through World Camp. As such, World Camp met with government officials in Malawi to understand current relief efforts and how we could assist. World Camp raised nearly $1,000 and put the funds to supporting efforts to keep displaced people fed and donated 88 pounds of Kapenta and 595 pounds of soya. Our donation was estimated to provide 570 meals.$990$986
MediServ is the medical component of World Camp's work. (ALL VOLUNTEER FUNDED, World Camp facilitated) MediServ was first operated in 2014 with a group of 16 surgeons, doctors, nurses and ancillary staff. The plan for 2015 was to take a similar group to Malawi in September however the government hospital in which our volunteers operate received funds to update their operating theaters just two months before our planned arrival. In lieu of taking a full group, World Camp Founder Baker Henson and a 2014 MediServ volunteer went to Malawi as a bare bones team. With this two-person team World Camp was still able to donated 100 Ostomy bags and appliances, solicited and carry over 707 packets of suture and 500 surgical blades worth $3,900.89 (donated by Global Links), performed 32 emergency/trauma procedures and 5 surgeries, and supervised and trained medical students and interns on 12 separate procedures or occasions.$0$44
