“Nc pre-k program - community-based, voluntary pre-kindergarten initiative designed to prepare at-risk-four-year-olds in north carolina for success in school. Approximately 300 children in lee county are enrolled in high- quality north carolina pre-kindergarten (nc pre-k) programs. The program is free to participants with the goal of helping young children prepare for kindergarten. Under the authority of the nc state board of education, nc pre-k classrooms are located in public schools (54 percent), licensed child care centers (27 percent), and head start programs (19 percent). These classrooms provide a full school day, full school year program that meets standards set by the state board of education to align with k-12 education and prepare children for academic success. In lee county nc pre-k sites include private childcare centers and and one public elementary school strategically located throughout lee county.”

"reach out and read" involves partnering with medical care practices to provide pre-literacy opportunities for children and their parents. The medical care provider will voluntarily incorporate (ror) into young children's regular pediatric checkups. Community outreach/public awareness/education will heighten the awareness and increase knowledge of early education, needs of young children and resources available for young children and families. Program coordination and evaluation focuses in the areas of program coordination, monitoring and public education to enhance the early childhood system in lee county for all smart start funded activitiies.”
