FORM 990, PI, L1: ORGANIZATION'S MISSION OR MOST SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITIES

Community general hospital foundation inc., doing business as novant health foundation thomasville medical center, is an integral part of the novant health system (collectively known as "novant health"), a not-for-profit integrated group of hospitals, physician clinics, outpatient centers and other healthcare service providers. Novant health is ranked as one of our nation's top 25 integrated healthcare systems - caring for patients and communities in georgia, north carolina, south carolina and virginia. In 2013, the novant health system reported $3.6 billion in revenues. Through philanthropy, novant health foundation thomasville medical center exists to support the community mission of community general health partners, inc., doing business as novant health thomasville medical center. The medical center and foundation strive to support health initiatives focusing on both prevention and wellness. The money raised and distributed by the foundation is monitored by its community board of trustees. The foundation board reviews all requests for funds to ensure that financial contributions made are consistent with the medical center's mission and that funds are distributed efficiently. The foundation provided the following support to the community in 2013: *the foundation purchased medications for patients who were unable to afford needed medication once discharged from the hospital. Without this assistance from the foundation to purchase this medication, many of these patients might have been readmitted to the hospital due to lingering illness. *to help in transporting patients and visitors from the parking lot to the hospital, the foundation purchased a transportation cart that is driven by volunteers. *to assist patients in need of screening mammograms and diagnostic mammograms when komen funds were depleted, the foundation paid for patients who were in financial need. *to assist local pediatricians in encouraging reading to increase literacy in their young patients, the foundation assisted the pediatric office in funding reach out and read, a national program to supply a new book to children from 6 months to 5 years of age on each pediatric visit. Over 60% of the books were given to children on medicaid, at or below 200% of the poverty level. The program has been proven to assist in school readiness and enhance parental involvement during the critical developmental stage of young children. *the foundation sponsored campers in attending the willie wheezer asthma day camp, where respiratory therapists serve as the counselors. Children were able to enjoy the events of summer camp and learn how to better control their asthma. For many, this was their first experience at a summer camp. The camp's goal is to reduce hospital stays for these children by teaching them how to better manage their asthma while in a controlled setting. *when emergency department patients' clothes have been destroyed, such as during a sexual assault or car accident, the foundation purchased clothing for them before they left the hospital. *when it is time for a newborn to be discharged, the foundation purchased car seats for any parent who could not afford one. *the foundation provided nutritional supplements for low income cancer patients in davidson county who qualified through davidson county cancer services needing supplemental feedings during cancer treatment. *to assist cancer patients in their recovery, the foundation paid for patients to participate in the training visit for the muscles to motion program to help them build strength and endurance during or following their cancer treatment.
