Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: COMMUNITY PROGRAMS:Mentoring: The Mentoring Program provides a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult for at-risk youth. Referrals are accepted from CIS programs and other community agencies, including those who partner with the Cleveland County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council and youth who are potentially gang involved, court involved, and those with risk factors for juvenile delinquency. Youth targeted for the Mentoring Program are Cleveland County Schools enrolled or suspended youth 6-17 years of age. Priority for referrals is from Juvenile Court with Juvenile Court Counselors who are able to refer directly to the Mentoring Coordinator. The purpose of the Mentoring Program is to positively impact the graduation rate and the risk factors for dropout, including involvement with the juvenile justice system and other negative behaviors.Teen Court: This diversion program partners Juvenile Court with qualifying first time offenders and provides an opportunity for offenders to have their record expunged after successful program completion. Youth offenders admit to the offense and appear before a trained court of their peers. The court determines an appropriate sentence, which includes community service participation in serving as a member of the Teen Court jury, as well as other sanctions that are deemed appropriate by the Teen Court. Teen Court provides an opportunity to juveniles to be accountable for their behavior and make amends for their actions with the goal being no further involvement with the Juvenile Court System.Community Service and Restitution: This program assigns offenders community service or restitution through the Teen Court or the Juvenile Court System as part of their sentence. If restitution is ordered/needed, following completion of the assigned community service, payment is made to the victim. This program is designed to provide an opportunity for the juveniles to be held accountable for their behavior by having them work to provide financial and physical restitution to their victims through compensated community service.

IRS990/Desc021st Century Community Learning Centers: These centers provide a range of high quality services to support student learning and development including support services after school four days per week and limited services during the school day. The overarching principle guiding the design of Next Generation Leaders is a focus on reading and math achievement. To that end, much of the afterschool component is based upon collaboration with the students teachers and from other afterschool support staff; and opportunities for independent practice and enrichment on specific standards aligned to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study that their regular classroom teachers identify. CIS Student Support Coaches serve as coordinators for four school sites within the Cleveland County School System, which are Kings Mountain Intermediate School, Kings Mountain Middle School, Shelby Intermediate School and Shelby Middle School.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0COMMUNITY PROGRAMS:Mentoring: The Mentoring Program provides a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult for at-risk youth.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0High School Programs: Through a variety of service delivery options and programs, CIS Graduation Coaches provide the necessary coaching, counseling and support to high school students and their parents/legal guardians so that they are knowledgeable, prepared and better equipped to chart a course for post-secondary education, vocational training, and/or a military or other career. College access and career readiness programming exposes students, and their parents where/when applicable, to study skills instruction, college campus tours, financial aid and scholarship information, SAT/ACT entrance exam preparation, the college application process, job shadowing and internship opportunities, career fairs, community service/service learning opportunities and much more. Graduation Coaches are based at the four area high schools and work as partners with school administration, guidance counselors, school social workers, and family members to give students the extra encouragement and support they need to stay in school and on track to graduate on time. At the high school level, services are offered most often during the regular school day and one-on-one. Graduation Coaches also provide resources to pregnant or parenting teens through referrals, home visits, advocacy and group meetings.
