DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Community Outreach: We began a new Education Justice Coalition project by holding separate listening sessions for Latinx and Black parents to hear their concerns and priorities and share with them the work that we do at DAE. The listening event for Latinx parents provided translation and was attended by 50 parents and caregivers. The listening event for Black parents was attended by 24 parents and caregivers.$850-
Campaigns: We worked on advocating for the needs and priorities of our members during the process by which the Superintendent, School Board, and County Commission set the budget for Durham Public Schools in the second half of the school year. We carried out a listening campaign across the district, gathering data from 1,600 staff members where we heard overwhelming complaints from members that they were being asked to cover classes due to a lack of substitute teachers. In response, we ran a successful campaign to get DPS to revise and improve their recruitment and onboarding of substitute teachers.--
Membership: At our membership meetings we keep our members up to date about current advocacy campaigns and changes in our working conditions, share information about our budget and current spending in the interest of financial transparency, and provide various kinds of support to members including networking and workshopping solutions to various problems we encounter. We have about 800 members and for recent meetings about 30 attend in person on average. Some of our meetings and mass communications are held using software tools such as Zoom, Constant Contact, traditional mail, and so forth.--
Professional Development: We worked on developing new leaders and strengthening our building level organizing with help from our parent organizations, the National Educators Association (NEA) and North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE). We ran an Organizing Fellows program consisting of 10 coaches and 20 fellows who met monthly to train and discuss practices such as signing up new members, spreading the word about our current issue based campaigns, & etc.--

IRS990ScheduleC/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0DAE advocates for policies that improve public education for students, parents, and communities. DAE sometimes endorses candidates that have a demonstrated commitment to our values and priorities but does not do so on a partisan basis. DAE does not contribute funds to support political candidates. In FY22 DAE endorsed the following the school board candidates: Millicent Rogers, Bettina Umstead, Matt Sears, Natalie Beyer, and Emily Chavez. DAE members that wish to participate in political action are encouraged to do so through a separately organized entity called the NCAE PAC, which is managed and operated at a statewide level and is not controlled by the board of DAE. The NCAE PAC keeps track of the amount of dues contributions that come from DAE members, and DAE has the right to request that up to 1/3rd of that amount be spent on candidates we support in our local elections. In FY22 DAE was entitled to spend $2,400 from the NCAE PAC.
