Campaigns: Most of our campaign work during the 2020-2021 school year focused on advocating for community safety in the face of the worst of the COVID 19 pandemic. We held town halls that connected members with district leadership that was influential in decisions that were made to spend the first of the year in remote learning. We worked to solve problems to make remote learning as effective as possible. During FY21 we conducted a statewide survey of 36 of the 100 counties in NC in order to provide some insight into the different regions' divide on schools reopening. We also advocated to stay in remote instruction until March 15, 2021, to allow all staff to receive one vaccine shot before reopening.--
Professional Development - We offered our annual Summer Leaders trainings to our members. The trainings attracted approx. 50 members and we sent 16 of our leaders to the NCAE summer traingings. We offered a regular book study group for our members on anti-racist education. We continued to support the professional development offered through the Community Schools Program that we brought to the district as a pilot program, through the work of our Community Schools Coordinators, as well as members who teach at those schools.--
Membership: We held online membership meetings every month of the school year as well as additional virtual membership events such as town halls on COVID safety. The monthly membership meeting attendance ranged from 25 to 100 members. We trained our board and volunteers in best practices in creating genuinely interactive and responsive online meetings in order to make sure our members' voices were heard and relationships were maintained during the pandemic. We conducted surveys of our members and Durham Public Schools staff on issues related to community safety and reopening strategies and used that data to advocate for our members in meetings with the district.--
Community Outreach: We held three public forums online for parents, families, and students to educate and advocate for a safe reopening to our schools after the period of remote learning that happened during the pandemic. The forums included 650 participants and over 7,500 views on Facebook. We worked with Tilde Language Justice Cooperative to ensure access to these forums for Spanish speaking families. We were one of only a few counties in the state to stay in remote learning until staff had the opportunity to receive one vaccine shot, which worked to keep staff, students, and families safe.--

IRS990ScheduleC/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0DAE advocates for policies that improve public education for students, parents, and communities. DAE sometimes endorses candidates that have a demonstrated commitment to our values and priorities, but does not do so on a partisan basis. DAE does not contribute funds to support political candidates. In FY21 DAE endorsed the following the school board candidates Xavier Cason, Steve Unruhe, and Jovonia Lewis. Also the following county commisioners wer endorsed, Nida Allam, Nimasheena Burns, Heidi Carter, Wendy Jacobs, and Brenda Howerton. DAE members that wish to participate in political action are encouraged to do so through a separately organized entity called the NCAE PAC, which is managed and operated at a statewide level and which is not controlled by the board of DAE. The NCAE PAC keeps track of the amount of dues contributions that come from DAE members, and DAE has the right to request that up to 1/3rd of that amount be spent on candidates we support in our local elections. That amount is variable, of course, but we currently have the right to request about $2,400 in spending from the NCAE PAC.
