Mission

Our vision is to build a dae that is relevant to members' lives, builds power for students, educators, and parents, works for racial and economic justice, and is a meaningful part of the durham community. Our mission is to unite, empower, and organize educators; to support and nurtue our students; and to build and lead collaborative partnerships in the fight to win the schools we all deserve.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Local Advocacy - We got the district to agree to allow DAE to partner with the district Human Resources department to work on resolving disputes between staff and administration, in response to widespread complaints that HRs handling of such disputes in the past has been one sided in favor of administration. We also got the district to agree to revise the Student Teacher Advisory Council in several important ways, including changing the name to the Staff and Student Teacher Advisory Council to include representation for people like cafeteria workers, custodial staff, etc; to move to democratic elections for faculty representation on SSTAC rather than having administration pick who represents the faculty, and to include DAE leaders in the drafting of agendas for the meetings. We successfully got the district to agree to de-privatize custodial services so that school custodians could get higher pay and state employee benefits.$52,825$10
Individual Member Support - We advocated for members who were experiencing significant distress at several schools in the district in partnership with the Human Resources department. We offered monthly Victory Friday gatherings for members at which social and emotional support and networking opportunities were provided. We trained members in the theory and practice of how to organize their buildings through use of one on one meetings, Red For Ed social media picture campaigns, and Victory Friday gatherings at the building level. We improved out district organization structure by creating a team of 5 district organizers who were assigned 10 building apiece, as opposed to having only one district organizer in the past. This provided individual members with a clear and accessible path to take when support from our organization was needed, and provided those members who became organizers with opportunities to grow in their confidence and skill as they grow into future leadership roles.$27,159$275
Professional Development - We began a new program of monthly meetings for educators of color to provide support and community building. We ran a series of workshops based on the recently published text Teaching For Black Lives, published by Rethinking Schools. We gathered extensive data on what it would take to retain teachers in the district in a climate of high turnover, and found that increased funding for professional development necessary for gaining new certifications and licenses and support in dealing with students who present significant behavioral programs was a major ask that our members wanted to make of the district. We have made that need clear to DPS and look forward to pressing those demands through our future participation in SSTAC meetings.$9,040$550

Last year was the first year in which a community schools program that we worked to bring to our district was implemented. It is in place at four elementary schools in our city. We shifted from advocating for these schools to adopt this nationally recognized and popular program, to doing the work to make it go. This involved hiring a community schools coordinator to oversee coordinators who the district hired at each of those four schools. We wrote grant applications to help fund that position for both the 2018-2019 and then the 2019-2020 school years.

Changes to Organizing or Governing Documents

In November of 2018, two changes were made. The first change creates a Student Services division position on our board in place of the previous position that was restricted to members of the administrative division. The second change means that the nomination period for all offices will now end on the final Tuesday in January. This amendment also means that people who are nominated will be required to confirm their acceptance of the nomination within seven days in order to be placed on the ballot.

IRS990ScheduleC/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0DAE members that wish to participate in political action are encouraged to do so through a separately organized entity called the NCAE PAC, which is managed and operated at a statewide level and which is not controlled by the board of DAE. The local branch of the NCAE PAC conducts interviews of candidates to determine endorsements, and keeps track of the amount of dues contributions that come from DAE members. DAE has the right to request that up to 1/3rd of that amount be spent on candidates we support in our local elections. That amount is variable, of course, but we currently have the right to request about $2,400 in spending from the NCAE PAC. That money does not come back through DAE's accounts, but rather from the NCAE PAC directly. In Fiscal Year 2019, DAE told NCAE PAC what candidates we endorsed and then they took the PAC contributions from our members and distributed them to those candidates. The only time political activity happens at DAE meetings is when candidates come to thank members for the PAC's endorsements at one of our membership meetings, and when we briefly announce and/or remind members of the PAC's endorsements at various meetings on other topics and subjects.
