Activity 2

Exhibits: vae produces 60 exhibitions each year, displaying the work of more than 800 artists annually. Vae's city market main gallery hosts 12 juried and non-juried exhibitions each year with monthly exhibit themes selected by an exhibition committee comprised of staff and artists. Vae also features 60 emerging artists annually in its exchange gallery exhibitions and an additional five artists in its retail incubator. Vae produces approximately 30 community exchange exhibitions which showcase local artists at community venues across the triangle.

Activity 3

Education & outreach: visual art exhanges's art in residency program is an intensive program with at-risk students from raleigh's mary phillips and longview high schools and washington gt elementary school. The students work with artists in residence to create public art projects. The art exchange project allows troubled students the opportunity to connect with their community and create a lasting, positive impression. The program's goal is to create a permanent installation of the students' work and, through the process of creating these murals, teach students about the careful planning, fabrication, and installation necessary to produce public art. Vae also regularly offers educational workshops, lectures, technique instruction, demonstrations and critiqes for both members and nonmembers as part of its commitment to futher artists' skills and provide general business knowledge. The keystone program is the bi-annual the business of being an artist series. Topics for this series include: how to approach a gallery; how to apply for artist's grants and residencies; how to effectively photograph artwork; pricing and framing for a gallery exhibition; how to make an artist web-site; how to write a professional artist's statement and resume; how to ship artwork; and creative marketing solutions for creative people. In addition vae hosts a monthly artists' night, which includes critiques with professional critics and art professionals and hands-on demonstrations. Other opportunities include the painter's forum and the plein aire painting group.
