“The 19-20 GEP program prior to COVID school closures went very well. When school closed on March 13, the GEP programs transitioned to a virtual program format. GEP is supported by school partners and well supported by parents and students. When school closed, GEP had to quickly transition to a program that could continue to support student achievement and provide parent support. We had some challenges but continued to persevere and move forward. It was evident that parent education is essential when going through a health pandemic. Our parents were not confident in their abilities to support their childrens learning during this time. GEP parents were not technology literate or savvy. They did not fully understand COVID-19 and was very fearful of the impact on their family. The GEP staff committed numerous hours to helping parents understand and navigate the schools communication. Transitioning for GEP staff was also challenging because they had to quickly be updated on new technology including ZOOM and Canvas. It was a learning curve for everyone. GEP did however support learning to those that had devices and access. GEP also provided parent support by provided ZOOM resource meetings, text and email.GEP did not operate a summer program this year (2020) due to COVID school closures. GEP surveyed all parents to determine if they would allow their children to participate in a summer program. Survey results indicated that there was not enough need to offer a summer program. Parent comments included risk of COVID exposure to their student and safety during this time. Survey results also indicated no interest in a virtual summer option. The GEP Administrative team including the four Site Director continued with program operations. Through partnership with several grassroots initiatives, GEP was able to provided families with several resources including gift cards for food, parent workshops and other community resources.”
