Food for Thought (FFT) was organized by a group of concerned parents, educators and growers who first came together in the spring of 2002 to improve the nutritional status and food awareness of children in the Ojai Unified School District (OUSD). With the help of our committed staff, board, volunteers and donors, our program has helped to raise awareness of the importance of healthy childhood nutritional practices, and the integral role of agriculture in our community, encouraging students to reconnect to the land and environment that sustains them. FFT has developed five inter-related program components with associated curricula that integrate California State Academic Standards. These program components are: 1) nutrition education, 2) garden-based learning, 3) agricultural literacy through farm field trips, and 4) advocating for fresh, local, seasonal produce in all school meals. The fifth and newest component, the 5Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle, rot and rethink!) focuses on minimizing

|---|---|---|
| Green and Healthy Schools Program: The Nordhoff high school program continues to grow with partnership from FFTO; Since 2013 - Food for Thought Ojai worked with Environmental Science classes and Environmental Field Studies classes (over 150 students per semester) to conduct trash audits and make visits to a small farm to learn about crop production, compost building, fruit tree pruning, native plants, animal husbandry and textiles. This program continues to inspire several high school students each year to explore college majors in environmental studies and careers in agriculture or organic farming opportunities. IMPACT OF COVID-19: Covid-19 forced cessation of in-person education beginning in Mid-March 2020. FFTO on-campus programs were furloughed. Planned curriculum that was put on hold: Soil science curriculum for all district 4th graders using a new microscope and camera combination and 9 high school field trips. Planned resumption of all projects for the 2021-22 school year. | $20,729 | - |
| Administration and various other program support has remained in place in spite of the furlough of all programs. It has proven to be a significant part of the programs for volunteers and others to keep the gardens and concepts alive during all of the furloughed activities. Anticipation of full program function for the 2021-2022 school year is encouraging. | $13,595 | - |
| Garden-based learning: The weekly garden-based learning opportunities in the elementary school gardens is a mainstay of the Food for Thought program. Each week close to 200 student have been encouraged to visit gardens with additional classes in curriculum during the school year by our Garden-based learning team. The gardens have produced seeds for saving and worm composting at all elementary school sites. Additionally, the school libraries feature "Seed Libraries" for students to take seed packets home for planting in their home garden. Fresh and healthy garden snacks are a key component of the garden program. Parents are always welcome to assist with garden club activities and FFTO increased the garden hours at each site to accommodate the demand for more garden activity. New goji berry bushes and passion fruit vines were introduced at all elementary gardens. Impact of COVID-19 Covid-19 forced the cessation of in-person education beginning in mid-March 2020. FFTO on-campus programs were furloughed. Planned curriculum that was put on hold, final lessons for 2nd grade students. Weekly Garden clubs. Seeds for Students newsletters were sent home with school meals for families wishing to plant at home gardens. Volunteers helped maintain all gardens during the furloughed times. | $8,923 | - |

| Miscellaneous costs such as printing, communication projuctions, and various other matters that are signifcant to the program but not allowed to blossom due to Covid-19 restrictions | $4,087 | - |
