Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Food for Thought (FFT) was organized by a group of concerned parents, educators and growers who first came together in the spring of 2002 to improve the nutritional status and food awareness of children in the Ojai Unified School District (OUSD). With the help of our committed staff, board, volunteers and donors, our program has helped to raise awareness of the importance of healthy childhood nutritional practices, and the integral role of agriculture in our community, encouraging students to reconnect to the land and environment that sustains them. FFT has developed five inter-related program components with associated curricula that integrate California State Academic Standards. These program components are: 1) nutrition education, 2) garden-based learning, 3) agricultural literacy through farm field trips, and 4) advocating for fresh, local, seasonal produce in all school meals. The fifth and newest component, the 5Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle, rot and rethink!) focuses on minimizing

Green and Healthy Schools Program: The Nordhoff high school program continues to grow with partnership from FFTO; Food for Thought Ojai expanded their work with three Environmental Science classes and one Environmental Field Studies class (over 130 students total) to conduct 4 trash audits and make 22 visits to a local farm to learn abount crop production, compost buildikng, fruit tree pruningh, native plants, animal husbandry and textiles. This program continues to inspire several high school students to explore college majors in environmental studies and careers in agriculture or organic farming opportunities. Additionally, Food for Thought facilitated the painting of garden shed and building of a new high school garden shed and greenhouse via a volunteer work. Soil science curriculum was taught to all district 4th graders using a new microscope and camera combination to illustrate the living soil in the gardens as the worm bins are now fully established at all elementary schools. The middle school invited FFTO to assist with 3 additional trash audits over the course of the aschool year with the new Environmentak Scuience classes.$36,274-
Garden-based learning***The weekly garden-based learning opportunities in the elementary school gardens is a mainstay of the Food for Thought program. Each week close to 200 students visit the gardens during recess and additional classes are taught throughout the school year by our Garden-based learning team. The gardens have produced seeds for saving and worm composting at several sights. Fresh and healthy garden snacks are a key component of the garden program. Parents are always welcome to assist with garden club activities and FFTO increased the garden hours at each site to encourage more participation. Added as part of this program is tghe "Seed Libraries" for students to take seed packets home for planting in their own home gardens. New goje berry bushes and oassion fruit vines were introduced at all elementaryd gardens.$35,529-
School Food- Harvest of the Month program is run with volunteers at the three large elementary schools to promote a county-wide produce choice. One Thursday a month approximately 1000 taste test servings are offered to students during recess and lots of discussion about locally grown seasonal produce takes place. We partnered with Nutrition Services to redesign a brochure to promote school meals and assisted with a professional development opportunity for department staff. FFTO works with county-based Ventura County Farm to School Collaborative team on sharing the Harvest of the Month resources and creating opportunities to source more locally grown produce for school meals. FFTO also assisted wityh the harvest of school grown Pixie tangerines for all schools to enjoy as part of the school meals in March.$14,460-
