Activity 2

Onshore Energy: Coal - We worked with researchers on a scientific paper for peer-reviewed publication demonstrating the link between upstream mining activity within a watershed, and the downstream mobilization of contaminants of concern, such as selenium. We created a variety of images and a video illustrating the impacts of increasing the export of coal from mines in Wyoming and Montana to markets in Asia. Oil and Gas Drilling - We provided new satellite imagery to wildlife scientists as part of ongoing multiyear studies of the impacts of natural-gas drilling on Mule Deer and Pronghorn in western Wyoming's Green River Valley. We demonstrated a successful methodology that combines satellite and aerial image analysis, government information about drilling, and direct observation from low-flying aircraft to forecast near-future drilling activity and communicate that forecast via Drilling Hotspot and Drilling Load maps. These maps are being used by citizen watershed monitoring groups and others to focus their effort collecting measurements that will be used to quantify the impacts of shale-gas development on surface water quality. Nuclear - We produced images showing the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan and damaged the nuclear reactors at Fukushima. Tar Sands - SkyTruth created a series of maps and images illustrating the historic, present and projected future extent of the tar sands mining and bitumen extraction operations in Alberta, the "business end" of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline proposal.

Activity 3

Offshore Energy / Marine Conservation / Other: SkyTruth's work on the BP / Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010 was included in the final report of the President's National Oil Spill Commission. Throughout 2011 we continued to monitor the site of the spill using satellite imagery, addressing rumors that the failed Macondo well was continuing to leak. We submitted comments to federal management agencies that were seeking public input on offshore drilling plans. We formed the Gulf Monitoring Consortium, a partnership of organizations dedicated to investigating and publishing independent information about pollution related to oil and gas development in the Gulf of Mexico. The Consortium investigated multiple reports of oil spills, discovered and documented unreported spills, and published our findings on our members' blogs and newsletters. We enlisted student volunteers and interns to help monitor oil-producing areas around the world, using various sources of free satellite imagery. Images are automatically downloaded, processed and integrated into Google Earth using SkyTruth software that also alerts the volunteers whenever new imagery is available over one of the designated monitoring sites. We investigated oil spills in Nigeria, Brazil, China, Vietnam, India, the North Sea and Angola.
