| SCENIC VIRGINIA CELEBRATED ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY IN MAY. AS THIS MILESTONE YEAR COMES TO A CLOSE, WE WANT TO EXPRESS HOW THANKFUL WE ARE TO HAVE YOU ON OUR SIDE. WE ARE EXTREMELY PROUD OF OUR WORK THIS YEAR - ALL MADE POSSIBLE THROUGH THE GENEROSITY OF FRIENDS LIKE YOU - AND WE INVITE YOU TO LOOK BACK AT WHAT YOU HELPED US ACCOMPLISH IN 2018: DURING THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY SESSION IN JANUARY AND FEBRUARY, WE WORKED TO KILL A HARMFUL BILLBOARD BILL. WORKING QUIETLY AND BEHIND THE SCENES (AS WE OFTEN DO), WE DEMONSTRATED TO THE BILL'S PATRON THAT THE BILLBOARD INDUSTRY-SPONSORED LEGISLATION WOULD CAUSE SPECIFIC HARM TO A LOCALITY IN HIS DISTRICT. HE RESPONDED BY SPIKING THE LEGISLATION. IN APRIL WE KICKED OFF OUR ELEVENTH ANNUAL VIRGINIA VISTAS PHOTO CONTEST, WHICH SHOWCASES THE GLORIOUS DEPTH AND BREADTH OF OUR COMMONWEALTH'S SCENIC RESOURCES. THE RICHMOND TIMES-DISPATCH REVEALED OUR GORGEOUS 2018 BEST IN SHOW AND CATEGORY WINNERS IN JULY, AND WE AGAIN RECEIVED ACCOLADES FOR ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL SET OF PHOTOS. IN MAY, WE JOINED WITH THE FATHER THAMES TRUST OF RICHMOND-UPON-THAMES, ENGLAND TO PRESENT THE RICHMONDS MEDAL TO THE FIRST U.S. RECIPIENT, NOTED ACTOR AND CONSERVATIONIST ROBERT DUVALL. WE WERE GRATIFIED THAT IN ACCEPTING THE AWARD, MR. DUVALL CITED HIS APPRECIATION OF SCENIC VIRGINIA'S MOTTO THAT "BEAUTY IS GOOD FOR BUSINESS, AND BEAUTY IS ESSENTIAL FOR THE SOUL," AS WELL AS HIS BELIEF THAT "VIRGINIA IS THE LAST STOP BEFORE HEAVEN." (WE HAPPEN TO AGREE.) OVER THE SUMMER WE COMPLETED OUR FIRST-EVER SUSTAINABILITY PLAN TO GUIDE OUR ORGANIZATIONAL GROWTH FOR THE NEXT 20 YEARS. WE ARE SO THANKFUL TO ALL OF OUR STATEWIDE SUPPORTERS WHO LAST YEAR HELPED US SECURE THE BEIRNE CARTER FOUNDATION'S GENEROUS MATCHING GRANT TO MAKE THE PROJECT POSSIBLE. THROUGHOUT THIS ENTIRE YEAR, WE ALSO CONTINUED TO MAKE GREAT PROGRESS ON MANY PHASES OF OUR VIRGINIA VIEWSHED REGISTER PROJECT, AS FOLLOWS: WE SOFT-LAUNCHED OUR VIRGINIA VIEWFINDERS WEBSITE AND ARE NOW WORKING ON AN ACCOMPANYING APP THAT WILL MAKE IT EASY FOR OUTDOOR RECREATIONISTS TO PHOTOGRAPH AND UPLOAD THEIR FAVORITE SCENIC SPOTS SO THAT OTHERS CAN VIEW THEM AND VOTE ON WHETHER THEY'RE SCENIC OR NOT. IN ADDITION TO OUR ONGOING PROJECT PARTNERSHIP WITH THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION AND RECREATION, WE BEGAN WORKING WITH VIRGINIA TECH AFTER THEY MADE US AN OFFER WE COULDN'T REFUSE: A RESEARCH PROJECT TO QUANTIFY - SCIENTIFICALLY - THE ELEMENTS IN A VIEWSHED THAT MAKE IT SCENIC. THIS IMPORTANT WORK IS PARTICULARLY TIMELY, GIVEN THAT THE GOVERNOR'S NEW METRICS FOR THE STATE'S LAND PRESERVATION PROGRAM DID NOT INITIALLY INCLUDE "SCENIC" IN THE CRITERIA. WE ASKED FOR SPECIAL CONSIDERATION, AND DESIGNATED VIRGINIA BYWAYS AND THE VIEWSHEDS OF HISTORIC SITES WERE ADDED. WE HOPE TO BUILD ON THAT WITH THE PUBLICATION OF THE VIRGINIA TECH REPORT THAT MAKES THE CASE THAT SCENIC BEAUTY IS NOT SUBJECTIVE. OUR PROJECT WITH VIRGINIA TECH ALSO INCLUDES A DRAFT PROCESS FOR RECOGNIZING OUR COMMONWEALTH'S MOST SIGNIFICANT VIEWS AND VISTAS. IN THE COMING WEEKS, WE WILL BE CONSULTING WITH OUR TECHNICAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE OF VIEWSHED EXPERTS FOR THEIR REVIEW AND FEEDBACK. AN UPCOMING PHASE OF THE PROJECT WILL BE OUTREACH TO ALL VIRGINIA LOCALITIES TO ASK CITIZENS ABOUT THEIR FAVORITE SCENIC PLACES. WE ASK YOU TO START THINKING ABOUT THIS NOW AND TO BE WILLING TO PARTICIPATE WHEN WE ISSUE THE CALL. ALL OF THESE EFFORTS CONTRIBUTE TO AN INCREASED PUBLIC APPRECIATION FOR SCENIC BEAUTY. ALL OF US ARE SO LUCKY TO LIVE IN ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACES ON EARTH, AND SCENIC VIRGINIA WORKS EVERY DAY TO BE YOUR PASSIONATE-YET-PRAGMATIC ADVOCATE FOR THESE EXTRAORDINARY SCENIC RESOURCES. WE LOVE WHAT WE DO, AND EVEN WITH TWO DECADES OF SUCCESSES UNDER OUR BELT, WE KNOW THAT OUR BEST DAYS ARE STILL TO COME. “Scenic virginia celebrated its 20th anniversary in may. May we count on you to continue your very generous support and keep us moving forward? If you love scenic beauty as much as we do, please let your answer be "yes."”

| IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 4 | SCENIC VIRGINIA CELEBRATED ITS 20TH ANNIVERSARY IN MAY. MAY WE COUNT ON YOU TO CONTINUE YOUR VERY GENEROUS SUPPORT AND KEEP US MOVING FORWARD? IF YOU LOVE SCENIC BEAUTY AS MUCH AS WE DO, PLEASE LET YOUR ANSWER BE "YES." |
