Activity 2

Infrastructure - ird is among a small number of non-governmental organizations with substantial large scale construction management capabilities and well-qualified engineering staff. We simultaneously manage multiple small and large-scale multi-sectoral infrastructure projects in conflict-affected environments, helping develop local capacity, services and economic opportunities. For example, in the west bank and gaza, infrastructure has suffered from decades of conflict and neglect. With the assistance of usaid funding, ird continues to contribute to improving the lives of palestinians by repairing and constructing key roads, schools, and water systems spread over the northern and southern regions of the west bank. Ird is one of [continued on schedule o]four organizations awarded a five-year, $300 million infrastructure needs program indefinite quantity contract (inp iqc) for construction activities in the west bank and gaza; ird was the only non-profit organization to be awarded this iqc. In afghanistan, ird is working in the southern and eastern provinces to increase stability by facilitating trade, improving access to goods and services, and fostering interdependence between neighboring villages and provinces through its usaid funded strategic provincial roads (spr) program. In addition to pure road construction, ird has a significant outreach including: arranging mou's with tribal leaders along each road, training and safety awareness programs, and a range of infrastructure development projects that enhance the vitality of the road.

Activity 3

Health - ird's health programs are designed to rebuild local healthcare infrastructure and equip communities to meet the basic health, nutrition and reproductive needs of their people. Designed to emphasize preventive as well as primary healthcare, ird programs include training, education and outreach to raise public awareness on topics ranging from family planning and hiv/aids education to nutritional information and health management. For example, in 2010, ird continued its community based support for iraqi refugees residing in jordan with funding from the u.s. Department of state. The program activities are threefold: providing vocational training for iraqis in amman linked to employment opportunities in iraq, imparting comprehensive information [continued on schedule o]focusing on business services and employment opportunities within iraq designed to inform decisions on return and reintegration and raising the awareness of youth, at-risk populations, and victims of violence in healthy alternatives to violence through programs of community building and peer health and relationship education.
