ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0During the filing year of 2021 for this 2020 990, an exemption was requested by us from having to file a 990 form because we are part of a church. The ruling for the exemption took 8 months to be processed within the IRS by the "Exempt Organizations Rulings and Agreements" department, Director: Stephen A. Martin). During this time, I was advised to contact the IRS Customer Service to receive advice on what to do about the 2020 990 I had been holding onto as long as I could in the meantime. The IRS agent told me on the phone on 10/22/2021 that I should just send in to the IRS the paper copy of the 2020 990 form because there would be no penalty exacted for any paper 990's mailed before the end of 2021. I even included a note on that 2020 990 that relayed what the agent had told me. Our 2020 990 was mailed on 10/27/2921 - long before our 2020 990 was due (there was an extension granted on it placed earlier that year while we waited for the filing exemption). I was in shock when the IRS sent me a notice that I received on 6/22/2022 saying my paper copy would not be accepted, especially since I received in 2021 an IRS letter from the IRS Director Stephen A. Martin, saying we are part of a church and are no longer required to file a 990 form. Please send me a letter letting me know that this situation has been corrected. Meanwhile, I have tried to cooperate by filing this electronic copy even though I feel that I have been misled by the IRS. Thank you for your help! Howard Brod.
