“Membership: asle activities serve the professional and scholarly needs and interests of its members and provide them with opportunities in the environmental humanities field: a subscription to and publishing opportunities in our quarterly journal isle, an e-newsletter, eligibility to run for office, serve as a coordinator or on committees, and apply for writing awards and grants; chances to present at a biennial conference, off-year symposia, or international conference; ability to join student mentoring programs; and opportunities to participate in featured programs/web stories on their work. We maintain an online membership portal with access to a member directory, online journal portal, and member discounts.”

“Publications and online content: isle journal: isle: interdisciplinary studies in literature and environment is the official journal of asle, published quarterly in a digital format. Distribution is primarily to asle members (approximately 1200) and institutional subscribers such as libraries. In addition, our publisher oxford university press has a large free access program for developing countries. Isle content is peer reviewed, and includes both scholarly articles in ecocriticism and creative works of nonfiction, fiction, and poetry, as well as book reviews. Asle news: the association produces a variety of articles on the activities of our organization and our members every year. We compile them in a quarterly e-newsletter, which is sent to members and subscribers (approx. 4800 in total) via constant contact; stories are posted at the website on the asle news tab, as well as featured teaching and research pages. Asle website: the association's website (www.asle.org) aims to be a rich resource in the burgeoning field of environmental humanities. There are articles or sections on innovative teaching models, featured research on projects or ideas across a broad range of arts and sciences, scholar of the month, a teaching resources database, directory of where to study in the environmental humanities, links and connections to various online journals and portals, and introductory materials on the field. Member publications are posted to the member bookshelf. Asle ecocast podcast: once a month, hosts interview a guest or guests on a current topic, and highlight their work in the field of environmental humanities. “Conferences and events: biennial conference participants present their work and attend panels and keynotes on subjects in the environmental humanities. Seminars, workshops, cultural events, and field experiences are also offered. The 2023 conference was attended by 900 people, co-hosted by aess (assoc. For environmental studies and sciences), and held at the oregon convention center in portland, or, from july 9-12, 2023. There was also a virtual conference component attended online by approximately 175 people. Spotlight program asle spotlight is a program founded in 2021 to feature the new work of our members in environmental arts and humanities. In 2023 there were two episodes, each featuring four guests and two hosts, held live via zoom, and recorded for viewing on our website. Live audiences were approximately 30 people per episode, and the recordings have more than a hundred views each.”

“Grants and awards: conference travel and membership grants asle offered a total of 12 grants to assist our members with funding their attendance at the 2023 biennial conference. The purpose of the travel grant is to substantively support participants who are in precarious employment or students who lack institutional funding. Relatedly, another purpose is to support members whose presence contributes to asle's mission of promoting equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. Asle also issued three in-kind international membership grants, which provide two years of asle membership to scholars outside north america who do not have access to professional development funding. Book and paper awards the 2023 asle book awards were presented in two categories: the best book- length work of scholarly ecocriticism, and the best book-length work of creative writing (any genre) with an environmental theme. Awards for the best graduate student papers presented at the biennial conference were also bestowed.”
