“Asle seeks to inspire and promote intellectual and creative work in the environmental humanities and arts. Our vision is an inclusive community whose members are committed to environmental research, education, literature, art and service, environmental justice, and ecological sustainability.”

“Biennial conference: participants present and hear speakers on subjects such as animal studies, climate change, creative writing, environmental justice, etc. Seminars, workshops, cultural events, and field experiences are also offered. The 2019 conference was attended by approximately 1100 people at the university of california, davis, ca, from june 26-30. Travel grants of 140 - 500 were given to 14 awardees. Donations by attendees during registration to help fire recovery efforts in the region was matched by asle, and totaled 3408.”

“Publications and website: isle journal: isle: interdisciplinary studies in literature and environment is the official journal of asle, published both in print and online quarterly. Distribution is primarily to asle members (est. 1500) and institutional subscribers (more than 3,000 access points, mainly online, including nearly 1,000 gratis for developing countries). Content is juried and includes both scholarly articles in ecocriticism and creative works of nonfiction and poetry. Asle news: the association produces an e-newsletter several times a year. The newsletter is sent to members and subscribers (approx. 4,300 total) by email; stories are posted at the website on the asle news tab and other feature pages: http://www.asle.org/stay-informed/asle-news/. Asle website: the association's website serves as a rich resource in the burgeoning field of environmental humanities. There are articles on innovative teaching models, member profiles on projects or ideas across a broad range of arts and sciences, sample syllabi from courses, a list of schools with programs of study, links and connections to various online journals and portals, and introductory articles and materials on the field. Member publications, teaching and research projects, and accomplishments are posted as well.”

“Membership: asle activities serve the professional and scholarly needs and interests of its members and provide them with opportunities in the environmental humanities field: subscription to and publishing opportunities in our quarterly journal isle, an e-newsletter, eligibility to run for office, serve as a coordinator or on committees, and apply for writing awards and grants; chances to present at a biennial conference, off-year symposia, or international conference; or to join student mentoring programs, and participate on discussion lists. We maintain an online membership community with access to a member directory, chat groups, online journal portal, and publisher discounts.”

“Asle grants and writing awards: grants: asle offers grants to assist our members with funding for their innovative projects and publications. Translation grants support work in ecocriticism from international scholars and to expand exchanges across cultures and continents. Subvention grants support innovative projects in ecocriticism and the environmental humanities. Community grants support projects that help build connections between the environmental humanities and place-based environmental organizations working outside the academy. We also offer international membership grants, which give free membership for two years to scholars outside north america without access to professional development funding. In 2019, asle gave 5000 in community grants and 5000 in translations grants, plus seven international membership grants. Writing awards: asle gives out awards at the biennial conference to honor outstanding work in environmental writing, for both published books and for graduate student papers presented at the conference. These awards were established to encourage excellence in the field. In 2019, three book awards of 500 each and three writing awards of 100 each were paid.”
