“Asle seeks to inspire and promote intellectual and creative work in the environmental humanities and arts. Our vision is an inclusive community whose members are committed to environmental research, education, literature, art and service, environmental justice, and ecological sustainability.”

“Membership: asle activities serve the professional and scholarly needs and interests of its members and provide them with opportunities in the environmental humanities field: a subscription to and publishing opportunities in our quarterly journal isle, an e-newsletter, eligibility to run for office, serve as a coordinator or on committees, and apply for writing awards and grants; chances to present at a biennial conference, off-year symposia, or international conference; ability to join student mentoring programs; and opportunities to participate in featured programs/web stories on their work. We maintain an online membership community with access to a member directory, chat groups, online journal portal, and publisher discounts. “Publications and online content: isle journal: isle: interdisciplinary studies in literature and environment is the official journal of asle, published quarterly in a digital format. Distribution is primarily to asle members (est. 1000) and institutional subscribers (est. ) such as libraries. In addition, our publisher oxford university press has a large free access program for developing countries. Isle content is peer reviewed, and includes both scholarly articles in ecocriticism and creative works of nonfiction, fiction, and poetry, as well as book reviews. Asle news: the association produces a variety of articles on the activities of our organization and our members every year. We compile them in a quarterly e-newsletter, which is sent to members and subscribers (approx. 4500 in total) via constant contact; stories are posted at the website on the asle news tab, as well as featured teaching and research pages: http://www.asle.org/stay-informed/asle-news/. Asle website: the association's website (www.asle.org) aims to be a rich resource in the burgeoning field of environmental humanities. There are articles on innovative teaching models, featured research on projects or ideas across a broad range of arts and sciences, scholar of the month, a teaching resources database, directory of schools with programs focused in the environmental humanities, links and connections to various online journals and portals, and introductory articles and materials on the field. Member publications are posted to the member bookshelf. Asle ecocast: once a month, hosts interview a guest or guests on a current topic and their work in the field of environmental humanities. “Conferences and virtual events: conferences from june 24-26, 2022, asle held a symposium at the university of delaware (newark de). "watersheds" attracted 87 participants and focused on water issues in that region, as well as nationally and globally. The event featured keynote talks, concurrent panels, and field excursions. Asle also sponsored a one-day event with the university of british columbia, okanagan entitled "fire and water," featuring the participation of many local indigenous voices. A seed grant of 2000 was provided for speakers, venue rentals, food, filming, etc. Spotlight program asle spotlight is a program founded in 2021 to feature the new work of our members in environmental arts and humanities. In 2022 there were four episodes, each featuring four guests and two hosts, held live via zoom, and recorded for viewing on our website. Graduate student workshops in 2022, asle held three online professionalization workshops for our student and early career members on the topics of public humanities (may), job market and postdoctoral applications (july), and academic alternative/adjacent careers (october), which were free and open to the public, as well as recorded and posted to our website. “Grants and awards: grants asle offered a number of grants to assist our members with funding for their innovative projects and publications. In 2022, five asle member projects were awarded grants. We funded two translation grants, which support the translation of previously published works in ecocriticism with the goal of expanding access to crucial scholarship and literature across cultures and continents. We also funded three subvention grants to support innovative projects in ecocriticism and the environmental humanities. Asle also issued three in-kind international membership grants, which provide two years of asle membership to scholars outside north america without access to professional development funding. Book awards the 2022 asle book awards were presented in two categories: the best book- length work of scholarly ecocriticism, and the best book-length work of creative writing (any genre) with an environmental theme. Because these biennial awards were postponed in 2021 due to the pandemic, there were two winners declared in each category. These awards included a prize of 500 for each of the four chosen authors.”
