Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Americans helping americans ("aha") provides basic necessities like food clothing, shelter and support services. Aha in rural appalachia is dedicated to poverty-stricken families, children, and elderly or disabled adults living to meet their emergency needs and strengthen their efforts to be self-sufficient.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Youth development- summertime means no school, no homework, and three months of fun for children all around the u.s. This means a significant amount of time spent unsupervised, valuable enrichment opportunities lost, and sometimes a lack of healthy meals during the day. Americans helping americans (aha) summer camp provided a healthy, educational, trouble-free outlet for 1,932 children to summer camp in kentucky, georgia, virginia, and west virginia. Many of these children are from very low-income families on fixed income who without the help of americans helping americans summer camp would be stranded without positive activities to participate in during the summer.(see schedule o for continuation)americans helping americans provided $20,000 in cash grants to aid children escaping their world of poverty by making sure their summer camp experience provided them with committed mentors, educational opportunities, and healthy meals during the summer months.
Activity 3
Housing, shelter- a home with more people than rooms and no indoor plumbing is classified as substandard. Americans helping americans (aha) has developed a variety of programs working with local residents in collaboration with churches and local public and non-profit agencies to address some of the most critical needs faced by appalachian people. Poverty in appalachia has persisted throughout the nation's economic boom for years because this is where unemployment is the highest in the country, where illness and malnutrition is most pervasive, where too many children have no shoes and live with their families in run down homes, often without heat and little nutritious food to eat.(see schedule o for continuation)working with local and national volunteers, aha assisted 864 individuals with home repairs for low-income families, elderly and disabled individuals. Aha has witness first hand homes without roofs, walls missing, and huge holes in the floors of homes where children live. This frightening fact is why aha works every year with trained volunteers groups to assist with home repairs. The work is very extensive, digging french drains, replacing foundations, installing wheelchair ramps and repairing roofs and floors. In some cases homes are virtually rebuilt. In addition to the $40,000 in cash grants provided to local organizations in appalachia for home repairs, we often hear of significant life changes resulting from the home repair projects. We receive testimonies of families renewing their faith in the goodness of others and of people newly motivated to continue their education.aha in appalachia concentrates its charitable and development efforts in west virginia, kentucky and tennessee regions of appalachia. These states include rural communities where the economy is most depressed, where life under poverty is most severe, where the needs of the people are the greatest, and where many opportunities abound to serve the families who live there.

AMERICANS HELPING AMERICANS (AHA) SUMMER CAMP PROVIDED A HEALTHY, EDUCATIONAL, TROUBLE-FREE OUTLET FOR 1,932 CHILDREN TO SUMMER CAMP IN KENTUCKY, GEORGIA, VIRGINIA, AND WEST VIRGINIA. IRS990/Activity3/Description0HOUSING, SHELTER- A HOME WITH MORE PEOPLE THAN ROOMS AND NO INDOOR PLUMBING IS CLASSIFIED AS SUBSTANDARD.
