Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Special olympics virginia, inc. Is a nonstock corporation that provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities at no cost to the athletes or their families. The organization provides opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other special olympics athletes and the community. Through the power of sports, our goal is to reveal the champion in all of us.

Special olympics provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other special olympics athletes and the community. Our program, however, is about more than just sports. Special olympics virginia's year round programs in health, education and community building address inactivity, injustice, intolerance and social isolation by encouraging and empowering people of all abilities.

THESE EVENTS PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE ATHLETES TO REVEAL THEIR INNER CHAMPION AND DISPLAY THEIR CAPABILITIES TO THEIR COMMUNITY. THIS INTERACTION ENLIGHTENS THEIR NEIGHBORS AND BEGINS THE PROCESS OF ACCEPTANCE AND INCLUSION.

ATHLETES COME FROM ALL CORNERS OF THE STATE TO COMPETE IN SWIMMING, SOFTBALL, TRACK & FIELD, BOWLING AND TENNIS. THIS EVENT ALSO FEATURES MORE THAN 500 ENTHUSIASTIC FANS IN THE STANDS THANKS TO OUR VOLUNTEER TO CHEER CAMPAIGN, AS WELL AS OUR ANNUAL HEALTHY ATHLETES EXPO, WHERE ATHLETES CAN RECEIVE FREE VISION, HEARING, DENTAL AND FITNESS SCREENINGS AND TREATMENT.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0SPECIAL OLYMPICS UNIFIED SCHOOLS INITIATIVES USE SPORTS TO DEVELOP SCHOOL COMMUNITIES WHERE YOUTH ARE AGENTS OF CHANGE - FOSTERING RESPECT, DIGNITY, AND ADVOCACY FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES. IN COLLABORATION WITH SCHOOL SYSTEMS ACROSS VIRGINIA, OUR GOAL IS TO INSPIRE THE FIRST UNIFIED GENERATION. TOGETHER, WE CAN CREATE MORE INCLUSIVE ATTITUDES, DEVELOP PHYSICAL FITNESS, PROMOTE COMMUNITY SERVICE, AND BUILD CHARACTER IN ALL YOUNG PEOPLE. MORE THAN 400 SCHOOLS ARE PARTICIPATING IN THIS INITIATIVE, WHICH INCLUDES OUR NEW CHAMPIONS TOGETHER PROGRAM. CHAMPIONS TOGETHER, A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE VIRGINIA HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE AND THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, INVITES HIGH SCHOOLS TO CREATE UNIFIED TRACK & FIELD TEAMS THAT PRACTICE AND COMPETE AGAINST OTHER LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS. OTHER COMPONENTS OF THE PROGRAM INCLUDE A SCHOOLWIDE AWARENESS ACTIVITY AND FUNDRAISING TO SUPPORT THE PROGRAM. CURRENTLY, 64 SCHOOLS ARE INVOLVED IN CHAMPIONS TOGETHER.
