Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The completed Form 990 is reviewed by the President, the VP for Business & Finance, and members of the Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees prior to filing the return.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

All Board members, the President, and the Vice Presidents of the College are required to complete a Conflict of Interest Questionnaire on an annual basis. The Questionnaire is designed to disclose any conflict of interest so that the Board can address the conflict directly and immediately. If, at any time during the fiscal year, a questionable relationship is identified, the Executive Committee of the Board will address it immediately.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The Board of Trustees Executive Committee has the responsibility of reviewing the salary and benefits of the President of the College on an annual basis. A performance evaluation is completed, and then reported to the full Board. The Executive Committee develops appropriate recommendations, based on the evaluation, for consideration by the full Board. Comparable data is compiled from peer institutions, and other standard college and university organizations and publications for purposes of determining appropriate levels of salary and benefits. The Human resources Manager compiles comparable information in regard to other officers of the College and the President makes adjustments, as appropriate, and as fiscally responsible budgets will allow.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The College makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and copies of the Form 990 available to the public upon request. The Form 990 is also available for public inspection on a third-party website.

The endowment consists of over 400 individual funds, the majority of which supports students directly through institutional scholarships. Approximately 15% of the funds provide support to academic programs through professorships, program chairs, lectureships, faculty travel, research, and other program expenses. IRS990/Desc0E&H College provided formal instruction and related academic support for 950 full-time equivalent students toward the fulfillment of Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Art degrees in a variety of fields of study. The college's academic program is shaped by goals to develop the students' intellectual abilities, to strengthen their ability to think critically about ethical decisions and responsible actions, to evoke a commitment to serve others, and to nurture their curiosity through lifelong learning. Student financial aid was provided to most students through a variety of scholarships and grants, supporting the pursuit of degrees. Formal classroom instruction was provided by faculty members in small classroom settings. To enhance the academic experience for students, services were provided through the library, academic computing, The Powell Resource Center (for academic counseling, career services, personal counseling, skill development, testing resources, tutoring, workshops, and academic accommodations for students with documented disabilities), and the Office of the Academic Dean. Writing labs and quantitative labs were available to students on an ongoing basis. Academic areas of expansion included a marching band program and the initiation of Occupational Therapy and Physician Assistants in the new School of Health Sciences. The new visual and performing arts center was opened to showcase student accomplishments in the fine arts curriculum. Project Ampersand was initiated which is a project-based learning environment in the core curriculum.
