Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

Goodwill's federal form 990 is prepared by an independent accounting firm, marcum, llp and is reviewed internally by senior management. It is then submitted by the president to all board members prior to filing with the internal revenue service.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The goodwill of greater washington conflict of interest policy applies to all the goodwill directors, officers, and employees. Board members are required to sign conflict of interest statements annually. All employees and board members must avoid even the appearance of a potential conflict of interest. Any conflict or potential conflict of interest is to be reported to the compliance officer. These documents are kept on file by the executive assistant or other designee.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

Written comparisons of the senior management compensation are made against for-profit and non-profit organizations, including other similar size goodwill organizations. Ceo's compensation is determined by the executive committee of the board of directors (pursuant to authority delegated to it by the full board) following, among other things, the board's completion of a performance evaluation survey. The last compensation review was completed in the 4th quarter of 2018. By board direction, all goodwill associates, including the ceo, are paid between the 75th and 125th percentile for comparable positions in both for profit (where appropriate) and nonprofit organizations.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

Goodwill makes its governing documents and conflict of interest available to the public upon request. Furthermore, the financial statements and federal form 990 are posted on goodwill's website.

IRS990/Desc0DONATED GOODS: IN 2020, GOODWILL OF GREATER WASHINGTON EXPERIENCED THE CATASTROPHIC EFFECTS OF THE WORLDWIDE PANDEMIC. THE 20 RETAIL STORES AND DONATION CENTERS THAT ARE CENTRAL TO THE FULFILLMENT OF GOODWILL'S MISSION TO PROVIDE JOBS, JOB TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH DISADVANTAGES AND DISABILITIES WERE SHUT DOWN FOR A TOTAL OF THREE MONTHS. THIS CREATED THE ENVIRONMENT FOR A FINANCIAL BURDEN AS THE ORGANIZATION WORKED TO SUPPORT OVER 600 FURLOUGHED TEAM MEMBERS. THE MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR REVENUE LOSS ALONG WITH THE COMPLETE QUARANTINE OF PEOPLE ACROSS THE REGION, CHANGED THE APPROACH THAT GOODWILL TOOK TO ITS DONATED GOODS ENTERPRISE AND ITS WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT OUTREACH. IN THE AREA OF DONATED GOODS GOODWILL KEPT ITS DONATION CENTERS OPEN TO RECEIVE THE OVERABUNDANCE OF DONATED GOODS BEING BROUGHT TO THE DONATION CENTERS AS PEOPLE CLEANED OUT THEIR HOMES DURING THE PANDEMIC "SHUT DOWN". WHILE THIS WAS A FURTHER BURDEN ON THE ORGANIZATION DUE TO FINDING ADDITIONAL WAREHOUSE SPACE TO HOUSE THE DONATIONS, IT DID ALLOW FOR SOME ASSOCIATES TO CONTINUE EMPLOYMENT WHILE THE STORES WERE CLOSED; PREPARED THE ORGANIZATION FOR THE RE-OPENING OF THE STORES WITH STRONG PRODUCT DONATIONS; AND ALLOWED FOR GROWTH AS THE PANDEMIC MANDATES WERE EITHER LIFTED OR MINIMIZED. GOODWILL OF GREATER WASHINGTON'S RETAIL STORES AND DONATION CENTERS ARE CENTRAL TO THE FULFILLMENT OF GOODWILL'S MISSION TO PROVIDE JOBS, JOB TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH DISADVANTAGES AND DISABILITIES. IN 2020, $30 MILLION WORTH OF GENTLY USED CLOTHING, FURNITURE, AND OTHER HOUSEHOLD GOODS WERE SORTED, PRICED AND SOLD IN GOODWILL'S 20 RETAIL LOCATIONS PLUS ONLINE, SAVING OUR CUSTOMERS HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ON QUALITY, LOW COST GOODS, WHILE PROVIDING THE REVENUE NECESSARY TO FUND OUR CRITICAL JOB TRAINING PROGRAMS AND SERVICES. IN 2020 ABOUT 1.2 MILLION TRANSACTIONS WERE MADE AND 738,000 GENEROUS DONATIONS WERE RECEIVED, KEEPING ALMOST 26 MILLION POUNDS OF DONATED GOODS OUT OF AREA LANDFILLS. GOODWILL STORES ARE ALSO A SOURCE OF MISSION FULFILLMENT. WE DON'T JUST PROVIDE JOB TRAINING TO PEOPLE WITH BARRIERS TO EMPLOYMENT; WE ALSO EMPLOY THEM. MANY OF GOODWILL'S 636 RETAIL EMPLOYEES HAVE OVERCOME SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGES AND OBSTACLES TO FIND SUCCESS IN THEIR WORK.
