Mission

Promote awareness of our community and its role in shaping experience. Nurture demand for design excellence within the built environment. Serve as a source of education and inspiration for our community. Continue to define and refine our standards of practice. Foster relevant, well-informed research to enhance our knowledge base. Sponsor peer recognition programs that inspire excellence. Promote collaboration across multiple design disciplines. Strengthen ties with educational programs that provide the academic underpinnings of our field.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Design awards program achievements in 2010 this program recognizes excellence in this field, reaching out to designers, clients, and fabricators throughout the world. Projects are submitted anonymously, and judged over two days of intense and thorough review. The judges are carefully chosen to represent environmental graphic designers, architects, landscape architects, and clients from healthcare, industry, museums, and retail. Approximately 10% of the submissions are recognized with awards at the conference, and profiled in the magazine and on the website. These projects are then used as the content for lectures and presentations on environmental graphic design.
Activity 3
Education achievements in 2010 research: working together with non-profit hablamos juntos, the robert wood johnson foundation, five universities, and five hospitals, segd developed a research program to develop and test communication programs for health care environments, which would address communication problems for non-english-speaking clients, patients, and visitors. Results of this work will be available to all healthcare systems and hospitals. Begun in 2008, the results, testing, and recommendations were completed in 2010. Higher education: segd was actively involved in providing educational materials and resources for teachers and university classes, bringing together students from different design disciplines to learn about environmental graphic design, complex sign systems, identity, and accessibility. Professional development: segd provided courses and workshops on subjects such as accessibility, ada, sustainable design and development, and legibility. Workshops on new technologies for communication and information were also provided. These courses are provided through workshops and long-distance learning.
