Form 990, Part I, Line 1, Description of Organization Mission:

Sitar Arts Center's mission is to offer possibilities that transform the lives of children and teens born into a world of unequal access to opportunity. We achieve the mission by engaging children and teens in the highest quality visual, performing and digital arts programming. We teach the arts so that our students learn about themselves and gain critical life skills. We create community for students and their families and we are an untiring voice on their behalf. Sitar bridges an opportunity gap in Washington, DC by providing an arts education that positively impacts youth from low-income households. Sitar's programs serve as an essential vehicle for developing the 21st century educational and workforce skills that pave the way for lasting achievement. Sitar's primary focus is reaching families that would not otherwise have these opportunities. Eighty percent of Sitar's students are from low-income households. Alongside its students and families, Sitar collaboratively builds an engaging and supportive community that brings together the District's families, teaching artists, and cultural partners. Sitar Arts Center provides a safe haven to more than 800 students a year, 80 percent of whom come from low-income households, teaching important life skills and fostering personal and artistic growth in D.C.'s youth

Form 990, Part III, Line 1, Description of Organization Mission:

Sitar Arts Center's mission is to offer possibilities that transform the lives of children and teens born into a world of unequal access to opportunity. We achieve the mission by engaging children and teens in the highest quality visual, performing and digital arts programming. We teach the arts so that our students learn about themselves and gain critical life skills. We create community for students and their families and we are an untiring voice on their behalf.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4B, Summer at Sitar: (continued)

Small Wonders (continued) As they follow their curiosities, explore and refine critical thinking, flexibility of thought and focus, they will find space to nurture their imagination, engage in collaborative work and propel innovation, with math and science woven into art, movement, and music. Students will participate in most camp trips and camp activities. Camp Sitar: Camp Sitar is for students in grades 1 8. Camp Sitar is broken into 3, 2-week sessions. Each session is based on a theme which is also connected to our summer musical. Students in grades 1 and 2 are in Kid Crafters and rotate between classes together each day as a group. Kids Crafters has four tracks with different art forms and classes that change each session. Young expressionists choose individual classes for each session. The classes are an hour and a half long, and the art forms and classes offered change each session. Summer Musical: For students who like to sing, dance, and act, Camp Sitar's summer musical provides the opportunity to put on an exciting, Broadway-style musical under professional direction and design. Students experience all aspects of mounting a full length musical from auditioning to rehearsal to final performance. Past productions have included Beauty and the Beast, Willy Wonka, Jr., You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, Hello, Dolly, Bye Bye Birdie, Guys and Dolls, and The Wiz, and Hairspray. Teen Arts Intensive: Teen Artists ages 12 and older will have the opportunity to enroll in two enriching sessions. Artists can register for one session or both. Students will choose 1 of 6 art intensive programs to immerse themselves in either session. The first session is 3 weeks and includes a collaborative project. The second session is 2 weeks and encourages collaboration, but focuses on intensive study. Students 12 and older, who register for Young Expressionists or Summer Musical, can register for Teen Arts Intensive for no additional cost.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0Teens at Sitar: Every semester, students have the opportunity to explore any field of artistic interest through our classes designed specifically for teens. Whether its editing film for a new documentary with professional filmmakers, performing gigs with the Saints Band, or taking center stage in Actor's Lab, teens have access to knowledgeable instructors and state-of-the-art equipment.Pre-teens and teens can participate in the S.E.A.L. Program (Sitar's Emerging Arts Leaders), where they can intensely focus on the art form of their choice, gain and strengthen artistic skills and prepare for continued studies in the arts through a structured program of courses, volunteer hours, weekly field trips, advisory meetings, reflections and independent projects.During the summer, teens at Sitar have the chance to receive paid internships assisting with classes for younger children, painting public murals around the city, or producing a full-length Broadway-style musical.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc1Music: The music program at Sitar is intensive and comprehensive and is the perfect means to advance 21st century learning skills, especially accountability and initiative, creative and critical thinking, and collaboration. In the Early Childhood Arts Program, babies, toddlers, and their parents explore music as a means to pre-literacy skills and motor development for the baby and deepened child-parent engagement and positive behavior management skills for parents. Arts Afterschool features music ensemble classes such as youth choir, the Saints band, percussion ensemble, and jazz improvisation which increase musical development and are highly collaborative. Each semester, the Sitar Instrumental Academy provides 80 students with individual instrumental and voice lessons and music theory classes. Through partnerships with Washington Performing Arts, the National Symphony Orchestra and DC Jazz Festival, students experience world-class music performances in Sitar's theater. Camp Sitar features 2-week intensives in piano, beginning band, and instrument-making with everyday items. The summer teen intern music artists are assistant teachers for the classes for younger children.
