Mission

Idea fosters the success of its members as leaders in providing reliable, economical, efficient and environmentally sound district energy services. We promote energy efficiency and environmental quality through the advancement of district heating, district cooling and cogeneration (also known as combined heat and power or chp) and we actively lobby to secure favorable policies, legislation and regulations for district energy and microgrids systems.

The association has members who pay annual dues.

Members whose dues are paid in full, "in good standing," are accorded the right to nominate members to serve on the board of directors and to vote for nominated candidates for voluntary service on the board. The election of directors is governed in the association bylaws which calls for a slate of candidates to be developed by the nominating committee, chaired by the immediate past chair, and the slate to be presented to members at least thirty (30) days prior to the annual meeting of the association, which is held at the annual conference each year.

All directors and officers are annualy sent a copy of the idea conflict of interest policy and required to sign and return an acknowledgement to the office of the organization's counsel. Results are recorded annual by the counsel. The anti-trust statement is read prior to all board meetings. The conflict of interest policy is issued to all current and nominated board members prior to the annual business meeting and reinforced at board of director meetings regularly.

The executive committee, led by the current chair, is assigned responsibility for setting and negotiating compensation for the president. As of april 8, 2014 a new five year contract extension was authorized for the period january 1, 2014 to december 31, 2018. The compensation review process undertaken by the executive committee considered comparable compensation levels for similarly situated non-profit industry associations using multiple sources.

Bylaws are posted on the association's website and are issued to all incoming board members. Anti-trust policy is a written document and issued to incoming members. The financial statements are made available upon request. Conflict of interest policy and forms are issued and authorized by the president and all members of the board of directors annually. Anti- trust policy is received at the beginning of all meetings of the board of directors, executive committee, and general meeting of the members.
