FORM 990, PART III, LINE 1, DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION MISSION:

The x prize foundation is an education non-profit that strives to bring about creative solutions to the grandest challenges facing humanity in the areas of space exploration, education, human health, global entrepreneurship, energy and transportation. The foundation applies an equal degree of diligence and care in developing and managing prize-incentive competitions in those areas where technological innovation is stagnant or regulatory and market forces present extraordinary obstacles. The foundation's underlying mission is to bring about radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity. A critical aspect of each competition will be an overall education campaign and dissemination of scientific information that is generated by the competition, which will be published online, and in treatise, thesis, trade publication, or in any other form available to the interested public. The organization will ensure that the competitions are widely-publicized and the scientific results of each competition are disseminated broadly. The success of each competition hinges on this publicity.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A, DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM SERV ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Global learning xprize the global learning xprize is a competition that challenges teams from around the world to develop an open source scalable software solution that will enable children in developing countries to teach themselves basic reading, writing and arithmetic within the 18 month competition field-testing period. An estimated 250 million children around the world cannot read, write, or demonstrate basic arithmetic skills. Many of these children are in developing countries without regular access to quality schools or teachers. The learning solutions developed by this prize will enable a child to learn autonomously, and those created by the finalists will be open-sourced for all to access, iterate and share. This technology could be deployed around the world, bringing learning experiences to children otherwise thought unreachable, who do not have access to quality education, and supplementing the learning experiences of children who do. The $15 million dollar prize is scheduled to be awarded the first quarter of 2015 as follows: five finalists will be awarded $1 million each. This prize will be awarded by the judging panel to teams with the best proposed solutions. The grand prize winner will be awarded $10 million for the top performing team solution based on the field testing of the teams.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4B, DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM SERV ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Barbara bush adult literacy xprize the barbara bush foundation adult literacy xprize presented by dollar general literacy foundation is a global competition challenging teams to develop mobile applications for existing smart devices that result in the greatest increase in literacy skills among participating adult learners in just 12 months. The solutions will overcome key barriers to literacy learning by improving access, while increasing retention, and scaling to meet demand. Our vision is to empower nearly 1 in 10 low-literate adults living in the u.s. With the skills they need to improve their lives and realize their dreams. Teams will compete in a multi-stage competition that tests for 1) ability to measurably increase the literacy level of low-literate adults within 12 months 2) creation of a design that is easy and accessible for use on a mobile phone so that learners can access it and operate it from anywhere, anytime and 3) software curriculum that is engaging, relevant and attuned to the needs and interests of the adult learner. Competing teams will build solutions that propel adult education into the 21st century and beyond, creating smart, mobile solutions that will take learners further and faster than they thought possible. This competition will put learning tools in the hands of those who need them most, so learning can happen anytime, anywhere. The applications will address the complexities of the adult learner's life and reality tackling the largest obstacles to achieving basic literacy by improving access, encouraging persistence, developing relevant learning content, and scaling nationwide.

FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4C, DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAM SERV ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Nrg cosia carbon xprize the $20m nrg cosia carbon xprize will challenge the world to reimagine what we can do with co2emissions by incentivizing and accelerating the development of technologies that convert co2 into valuable products. These technologies have the potential to transform how the world approaches co2 mitigation, and reduce the cost of managing co2. The competition will have two tracks one focused on testing technologies at a coal power plant and one focused on testing technologies at a natural gas power plant. Each track will operate as a separate competition on the same timeline. The carbon xprize seeks to inspire the brightest minds around the world to tackle a significant challenge and help solve climate change. The prize will incentivize development of new and emerging co2 conversion technologies, accelerating them from laboratory testing to demonstration under real world conditions. The prize will help identify the most promising pathways for co2 conversion and prove they can be deployed at power plants and other industrial facilities. Ultimately, the impact of the prize will go far beyond the critical demonstration of innovative technologies, by inspiring transformation, enabling new markets, and empowering people to be a part of the solution to one of our world's grandest challenges.
