“The foreign service youth foundation awarded foreign service youth who finished top among their fellow contestants in its annual art, essay, academic merit, community service, kidvid, and welcome home video contests. Art and essay contests encourage foreign service youth to reflect upon an aspect of their foreign service upbringing and the impact it has had on them. The academic merit award honors the top two fsyf high school seniors with outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements. The community service award recognizes fs youth who have distinguished themselves by giving back to their local communities. The kidvid award encourages youth to share their overseas experience in a short video covering certain aspects of their overseas post. The welcome home video contest encourages fs youth to create a short video detailing life back in the d.c. Metropolitan area. This past year, fsyf organized and hosted the awards ceremony that brings together state department officials and contest and award honorees.”

“Fsyf organized a 5k fun run for a second year in a row. Approximately 70 family members attended this year which provides a chance for the foreign service community to welcome new officers and families as well as welcome back families returning from overseas assignments.”

“EACH YEAR, IN LATE SUMMAR, FSYF OFFERS RETURNING MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL FS YOUTH A RE-ENTRY PROGRAM. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE RE-ENTRY PROGRAM IS TO HELP FS YOUTH RE-INTEGRATE OR INTEGRATE FOR THE FIRST TIME INTO AMERICAN SCHOOLS AND AMERICAN CULTURE. MANY STUDIES ON THIRD CULTURE KIDS (TCKs)DISCUSS THE REVERSE CULTURE SHOCK OF RETURNING TO ONE'S HOME COUNTRY. FSYF PROVIDES FS YOUTH WITH ADVICE, SUPPORT, AND AN OPPORTUNITY TO NETWORK WITH OTHER FS YOUTH AT THE RE-ENTRY PROGRAM. THIS YEAR RE-ENTRY WAS EXPANDED TO INCLUDE A PROGRAM FOR PARENTS WHICH WAS HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL. THIS YEAR 51 YOUTH AND PARENTS ATTENDED RE-ENTRY.”
