Mission

We look to a world free from the threat of nuclear weapons, formalized in negotiated treaties, established by a cooperative global security agenda. Nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation are inseparable. They are both essential to global security, and to greater international trust and confidence. Basic looks to develop and use our established reputation as a respected and trusted independent source of information, ideas and perspectives to strengthen the international momentum gathering behind both these processes in the united states and in europe. We aim to do so by facilitating informed dialogue and debate in an inclusive manner that is at once realistic and transformational, and addresses security concerns directly. We are focusing our efforts on encouraging everyone to engage with an open mind in the search for more sustainable global security.

Governance Explanations

The form 990 was prepared by the outside accountants and reviewed by senior management. A final copy of the 990 was sent to the entire board and officers prior to filing with the irs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Basic has written policies for conflict of interest, whistleblower and document retention and destruction. Basic's conflict of interest policy stipulates required disclosure, the process for determining whether a conflict exists, and if so, steps for action. The conflict of interest policy is distributed to all basic board members, officers, and staff. The policy is monitored on an annual basis and more frequently as necessary by the executive director and members of the board. If a possible conflict arises, all interested parties are provided the opportunity for a hearing and to look for possible arrangements that would avoid a conflict of interest. If necessary, the governing board or outside committee, as deemed appropriate, will take corrective or disciplinary action.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

Annually, the board reviews and approves the compensation of the executive director. The board uses a pay scale and the organization's budget to determine appropriate pay levels for the organization, while considering standard rates outside of the organization. The deliberation and decision of the board's review is documented in the minutes. The executive director is responsible for decisions about compensation of all other staff. The executive director's salary was last reviewed by the board in november 2013.
