THE MLRC INSTITUTE CONTINUED THE FIRST AMENDMENT SPEAKERS BUREAU, A PROJECT CREATED TO EDUCATE THE GENERAL PUBLIC ABOUT THE FIRST AMENDMENT PROTECTIONS OF FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND FREEDOM OF THE PRESS. IT FACILITATED PRESENTATIONS ON THREE TOPICS: CENSORSHIP, PUBLISHING ONLINE AND THE REPORTER'S PRIVILEGE.THE SPEAKERS BUREAU WAS MADE UP OF REPORTERS, EDITORS AND MEDIA LAWYERS FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY, WHO HAVE BEEN CONDUCTING PRESENTATIONS-AT CONFERENCES, COLLEGES, HIGH SCHOOLS, BOOKSTORES, ROTARY CLUBS AND OTHER VENUES-ON THESE THREE TOPICS USING A "TURN-KEY" SET OF MATERIALS CREATED BY THE MLRC INSTITUTE.THE CENSORSHIP TOPIC ADDRESSED THE REGULATION OF SPEECH BY THE GOVERNMENT. IN PARTICULAR, IT FOCUSED ON CENSORSHIP IN SCHOOLS AND STUDENT SPEECH, CENSORSHIP ONLINE, AND CENSORSHIP IN FILM, TELEVISION AND RADIO.THE PUBLISHING ONLINE TOPIC, ENTITLED "ONLINE NEWS: REDEFINING JOURNALISM?," ADDRESSED THE MEDIA'S USE OF THE INTERNET; NEWS ORGANIZATIONS' INTERACTION WITH THEIR AUDIENCE ONLINE; THE USE OF CONTENT SUBMITTED BY READERS AND VIEWERS; BLOGS, WHETHER KEPT BY MEDIA STAFF OR THE PUBLIC; LIABILITY FOR DEFAMATION FOR STATEMENTS MADE ONLINE; AND COPYRIGHT AND PRIVACY LAW. THE REPORTER'S PRIVILEGE TOPIC PROVIDED AN EXPLANATION OF THE PRIVILEGE AND ITS HISTORY, WITH THE HEART OF THE PRESENTATION FOCUSING ON WHY THIS PRIVILEGE SHOULD MATTER TO THE PUBLIC. CENTRAL TO THE PRESENTATIONS HAS BEEN JOURNALISTS TELLING THEIR OWN STORIES-ABOUT ARTICLES AND BROADCASTS THEY COULD NOT HAVE REPORTED BUT FOR THEIR USE OF CONFIDENTIAL SOURCES, AND ABOUT EVER-INCREASING THREATS TO THEIR USE OF THESE SOURCES. IN 2015, THE MRC INSTITUTE PRESENTED SCORES OF PROGRAMS BEFORE HUNDREDS OF ATTENDEES ON THESE THREE TOPICS. IN OCTOBER 2015 THE BOARD OF THE INSTITUTE HELD A RETREAT WHERE IT DETERMINED TO SOMEWHAT ALTER ITS EXECUTION OF ITS MISSION. RESPONDING TO A PUBLIC NEED, IT DECIDED TO PRESENT A SERIES OF LEGAL WORKSHOPS FOR JOURNALISTS AIMED AT INDEPENDENT REPORTERS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS, SUCH AS BLOGGERS, FREELANCERS, ETC., WHO DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO A CORPORATE ATTORNEY BUT WOULD BE AIDED BY A SEMINAR GIVEN BY MEDIA LAW EXPERTS. THE INSTITUTE WILL ORGANIZE SUCH WORKSHOPS IN NEW YORK AND OTHER CITIES.$0$0
