Activity 2

Writers in Schools, a literary arts outreach program, is committed to developing the next generation of readers and writers. The program brings nationally-known authors to Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD high schools to discuss their books, and donates copies of these books directly to students. Program accomplishments include: * Coordinating 160 author seminars in high school English classrooms, libraries, and books clubs in which PEN/Faulkner provides individual copies of a visiting author's books, resource materials to teachers, helps teachers and students prepare for author visits, and bring authors to the schools to meet with students for literary discussions. * Coordinating five New Heights Teen Parent Book Clubs in which program volunteers meet with students on a bi-weekly basis to host guided readings and discussions of the work of local authors of both adult and children's literature. Authors visited the book clubs once every 6-8 weeks to discuss their work with students. * Work with the Free Minds Book Club & Writing Workshop in order to support their On The Same Page initiative, which brings young men recently released from federal prison into local schools and community groups to discuss their own reading and writing habits. This creates conversations about both literature and juvenile justice. * Writers receive stipends for their work, which directly supports the local literary arts community and working writers.
