Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The pen/faulkner foundation confers annual national prizes to recognize excellence in contemporary american fiction, brings quality literary programs to the washington, dc metropolitan area, and extends its programs to young people who are forming their literary tastes, exploring their talents as writers, and contemplating their future vocations. To confer annual national prizes to excellence

Major Activities

Activity 2
Writers in Schools, a literary arts outreach program, is committed to developing the next generation, of readers and writers. The program extended the Foundation's mission to young people by donating books and bringing nationally-known authors to Washington, D.C. public high schools to teach literature and the art of writing fiction. Program accomplishments include: (1)Seminars with authors-Provided students with individual copies of a visiting author's books, provided resource materials to teachers, helped students study the books to prepare for discussions with the writers, brought the authors to schools to meet and have lively conversations with students. (2)New Heights Teen Mothers Reading Group-met with groups of young mothers who are students at Cardozo Senior High School, provided them with free copies of author's book; met for guided reading and discussion sessions, brought the authors to the center to meet and discuss the work with students. Similarly, introduced young mothers to children's literature and authors. (3)New Beginnings. Formerly Oak Hill Juvenile Correctional Facility. PEN/Faulkner Board member and writer George Pelecanos spearheaded a book group in this facility with young men, modeled after the teen mothers' reading group. (4)Teachers and writers both received stipends for their work. Since 1989, the Writers in Schools program has brought published writers into the public schools to meet with high school students to discuss literature, the writing life, and the complex, critical themes raised within fiction. For many of the program's students who live in communities with little access to contemporary arts and artists, meeting a writer proves to be a key experience in developing literary talents and contemplating future careers.

IRS990/Description0Awards and book reading programs expose authors to new audiences and honored the best published works of fiction by contemporary writers. Program accomplishments include: (1) PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction is a national prize for published works by American citizens. The award is unique among literary honors because writers founded it to pay tribute to their peers. The PEN/Faulkner Foundation chose three award judges, themselves noted authors of fiction, to select the winner and four runner-up prizes. The judges selected five books among the 300 works submitted and named the "First Among Equals" and four runners-up of the largest peer-juried prize for fiction in the United States. The Foundation presented the awards at an annual event, at which the five honorees read from and discussed their works. (2) PEN/Malamud Award and Memorial Reading honors excellence in the art of the short story. A panel of PEN/Faulkner Foundation directors, together with representatives of Bernard Malamud's literary executors chose two honorees on the basis of their entire collections of published work. The Foundation held a public awards event with readings and audience discussions led by the honorees. Literary Programs: Conducted a series of book readings, audience discussions, and receptions to introduce noted authors to the citizens of Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
