Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The Shakespeare Theatre Company creates, preserves and promotes classic theatre-ambitious, enduring plays with universal themes-for all audiences. Through the creation of provocative, imaginative, and accessible theatre, STC ignites a dialogue that connects the universality of classic works to the shared human experiences of the modern world.

Major Activities

Activity 2
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS - The Shakespeare Theatre Company's Education Department strives to make Shakespeare and classical theatre exciting both on the stage and off. The Department annually provides close to 20,000 children and adults with arts education experiences through its roster of 26 comprehensive school, community engagement, training and audience enrichment programs. Text Alive!, an in-school arts enrichment program, supports Common Core State Standards for English and Theatre. A collaboration between students, classroom teachers and STC teaching artists, Text Alive! explores a Shakespeare play and culminates in a performance of his work on one of the Theatre's two stages. Participation in Text Alive! is free of charge. Both Text Alive! and SHAKESPEARIENCE Student Matinees are committed to serving local underserved children. SHAKESPEARIENCE provides subsidized tickets on a sliding scale for local classrooms. The program also supplies pre-show in-school workshops and study guides. STC's Internship and Fellowship programs are highly competitive among recent college graduates who use the program to gain real world professional arts administration and artistic experiences. Creative Conversations, a mainstay of STC's audience enrichment programs, provides a rotation of four free discussion programs designed to enhance the productions playing on-stage. Happenings at the Harman, STC's free performance series, connects patrons who live and work in the Penn Quarter neighborhood with local performing artists. This program is held on Wednesdays from noon to 1 p.m. in The Forum at Sidney Harman Hall. Patrons are encouraged to bring their lunch to the one hour performances. Each year, STC creates relevant resource materials to accompany the Season's productions, including the First Folio Teacher and Student Resource Guide and The Guide to the Season's Plays. Finally, the Theatre also provides professional development seminars for adults and a summer camp for children. Since 2000, Shakespeare Theatre Company, in conjunction with The George Washington University, has offered a Master of Fine Arts degree, to help develop the next generation of actors for classical theatre. Training no more than 16 actors each year, the Academy for Classical Acting's one-year, fully accredited intensive graduate program focuses on the specific craft of performing Shakespeare and other classical texts and is therefore an alternative to most traditional MFA acting programs. Alumni from this program go on to perform classic theatre with reputable professional theatre companies from around the country.

IRS990/Description0PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAMS - The Shakespeare Theatre Company (STC) believes that a classical play is defined not only by its poetic language or its influential playwright, but also by the timelessness of the themes and questions that it poses to its audience. Part of STC's mission is to make classical theatre accessible to audiences, helping them view the stories through a 21st-century lens. The universal themes of family, love, patriotism and leadership, depicted in STC's mainstage offerings, are relatable by all people and particularly relevant to Washington, D.C.'s contemporary audiences, in light of the country's (and the world's) political, social and economic realities. Shakespeare Theatre Company is especially equipped to provide this programming to the D.C. region as the only major theatre in this D.C. metropolitan area devoted to producing a classic repertoire. From ancient Greece to 20th-Century America, Shakespeare Theatre Company annually produces six classical plays-both famous and rarely performed works-that reveal the human dilemma and are accessible to contemporary audiences. Over the past 25 years, Shakespeare Theatre Company has performed 150 productions-including every play in Shakespeare's canon-for more than 2.5 million audience members. The Shakespeare Theatre Company seeks to bring the best of performing arts to D.C. audiences by making its two facilities (774-seat Sidney Harman Hall and 451-seat Lansburgh Theatre) available to a broad spectrum of local, national and international arts companies. During the 2010-2011 Season, the Theatre launched the "STC Presents"series. A great success, the series was included again with the 2011-2012 Season and is being planned for the upcoming 2012-2013 Season. Through the Harman Center for the Arts, STC provides mid-sized theatre space, in downtown D.C., to national tours, local dance festivals and many others. STC is deeply committed to its hometown of Washington, D.C. and has proudly served as a catalyst for revitalization in the Barracks Row/Eastern Market area and the historic Penn Quarter of downtown Washington. Continued collaboration with other major arts and cultural organizations further establishes Shakespeare Theatre Company as a major cultural destination and community resource. Each year, Shakespeare Theatre Company launches its season with the annual Free For All. Since 1991, this signature outreach program has presented free, full-scale classical theatre productions to over 630,000 D.C. area residents. The Free For All is the most successful community outreach program in STC's 25-year history. The program provides new and diverse audiences, especially those who might otherwise be financially unable, with the opportunity to experience classical theatre, for free. The Shakespeare Theatre Company develops a Play Guide to accompany the production and distributes it to children attending the event. STC's Education Department also provides a Students for Shakespeare reserved ticket program, for student groups attending the Free For All.
