Activity 2

Federal, field & legal advocacy: it was a momentous year at the state level in the fight for marriage equality, and hrc was-and continues to be-a key player in the ongoing struggle. Hrc played a key leadership role in new york's fight for marriage equality including providing campaign expertise and field organizers across the state to build and mobilize public support and to deliver key votes in the state senate which culminated in passage of the historic ny "marriage equality act" on june 24, 2011. Hrc fought tirelessly to win similar legislative victories in washington state and maryland in february 2012. As a result of these historic legislative actions, nearly 12% of the u.s. Population lives in states with marriage equality. Protection of hard-fought marriage rights is a priority and hrc has been involved in maine, maryland, minnesota, new hampshire, north carolina and washington state. Hrc pursues an aggressive agenda to advance equality and opportunity for the lgbt community in areas of employment, health care, school safety and relationship recognition through legislative action and federal regulation.

Activity 3

Public policy, education & training: hrc works to build understanding and awareness of the lgbt community by telling our stories to the american public through the mainstream press. Hrc also maintains a presence in the lgbt media to help educate, inform, and engage our community. Hrc worked to share our stories through our website www.hrc.org, our publications, including equality magazine, and a variety of online outlets such as our on-line video series, "americans for marriage" and our blog, "hrc back story." the "call it out" campaign shines a spotlight on homophobia and transphobia, holds anti-lgbt leaders, organizations and individuals accountable for their words and actions, and promotes respect and civil discourse. Hrc convened nearly 300 clergy and religious leaders from all backgrounds and faith traditions to ensure congress knows that people of faith believe in fairness for lgbt people.
