Activity 2

Cancer issues program - npf's sixth, all-expenses-paid educational program on cancer issues. On-the-record experts helped 16 u.s. Based journalists sort out new research, new purported risks, treatment options and the soaring price of care. Topics included advances in specific cancers, the emerging role of gene mutations, behavioral and social issues. Journalist discussions and critiques, with plenty of time for q&a, enriched the four-day program.

Activity 3

Alzheimer's issues program: a comprehensive program for journalists on alzheimer's disease, a looming public health issue on which we already spend one percent of our gross domestic product in the u.s. This four-day, all-expenses-paid program featured experts on topics including the latest research in alzheimer's prevention, diagnosis and treatment; the soaring costs of care and lost productivity; global aging and its implications; the personal stress of care-giving; ethical issues around alzheimer's disease; ideas for change, and more. In journalist-only discussions, we introduced web resources and talked about ways to present this complex story. This program was underwritten by pfizer inc., contributions from the lawrence taishoff endowment fund at npf, and the npf programs fund.
