Mission

Grassroots empowers people in crisis to make positive changes by offering professional, 24-hour crisis intervention, shelter, and outreach services. Grassroots is a 24-hour professional crisis intervention service, available to anyone in need of immediate assistance for a mental health, situational, family, personal, or shelter crisis. Our goal is to help people achieve a positive resolution of the crisis situation and develop a longer term plan to achieve stability.

FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Our goal is to help people achieve a positive resoultion of the crisis situation and develop a longer term plan to achieve stability.

Social security for eligible persons, and assistance locating permanent housing. Transportation and limited financial support are also available. Staffing includes case managers, residential assistants, drivers and kitchen staff. Volunteers assist with meals, mentoring, recreational activities, tutoring and fundraising. In fy16, the family shelter served 99 people and provided 11,133 bednights. The men's shelter served 56 men and provided 6,313 bednights. The majority of adults in shelter have a mental health diagnosis, physical disability or serious health issues, or an addiction problem.

Other program services: route one day resource center which serves the homeless population living outside along the route one corridor in howard county. Last year the program served 831 individuals. Emergency motel program serves up to three families per day area motels for up to 15 days, while a case manager works with them to resolve their homeless situation. In fy16 the program served 106 people. The cold weather shelter provides up to 25 additional shelter beds during the winter months through a partnership with the faith community. Each participating congregation hosts the shelter for one or two weeks and grassroots provides staffing and management of the program. In fy 16 the program served 85 homeless individuals including 5 families and 8 children.

IN FY16, STAFF ANSWERED 32,721 CRISIS CALLS. WALK-IN COUNSELING IS PROVIDED ON SITE, 24-HOURS. THERE WERE 2,319 WALK-IN CONTACTS IN FY16.

THE TEAM RESPONDS WITH THE POLICE TO PRIVATE RESIDENCES, WORKPLACES, ACCIDENT SCENES, PUBLIC LOCATIONS, AND PROVIDES ASSESSMENT, CRISIS INTERVENTION COUNSELING, ACCESS TO COMMUNITY RESOURCES, CONFLICT RESOLUTION, FACILITATION OF HOSPITALIZATION, AND SPECIALIZED ASSISTANCE IN TRAUMATIC DEATH SITUATIONS. LAST YEAR THE PROGRAM SERVED 831 INDIVIDUALS. EMERGENCY MOTEL PROGRAM SERVES UP TO THREE FAMILIES PER DAY AREA MOTELS FOR UP TO 15 DAYS, WHILE A CASE MANAGER WORKS WITH THEM TO RESOLVE THEIR HOMELESS SITUATION. IN FY16 THE PROGRAM SERVED 106 PEOPLE. THE COLD WEATHER SHELTER PROVIDES UP TO 25 ADDITIONAL SHELTER BEDS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE FAITH COMMUNITY. EACH PARTICIPATING CONGREGATION HOSTS THE SHELTER FOR ONE OR TWO WEEKS AND GRASSROOTS PROVIDES STAFFING AND MANAGEMENT OF THE PROGRAM. IN FY 16 THE PROGRAM SERVED 85 HOMELESS INDIVIDUALS INCLUDING 5 FAMILIES AND 8 CHILDREN.
