Mission

Provide 24-hour access to quality behavioral health, crisis intervention and homeless services to individual and family consumers in need.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Crisis intervention services include 24-hour hotlines and walk-in counseling for anyone in need of immediate assistance. The hotlines include a general crisis line and the maryland crisis hotline which is a suicide prevention line that becomes a disaster response line during statewide emergencies. Grassroots also participates in the national life line, a national suicide prevention hotline. Grassroots answers hotlines and provides back-up for other agencies that require a 24-hour response. In fy13, staff answered 25,799 crisis calls. Walk-in counseling is provided on site, 24-hours, and at two satellite locations part-times
Activity 3
Motel assistance- as a backup to emergency shelter, grassroots has the capacity to house up to 5 families for up to 15 days in motel when the shelter is full and there are no immediate alternatives. The staff works intensively with these families to help them find more permanent arrangements including other shelter, their own apartment, or relocating to be with family members or friends. In fy13, 146 clients were served representing 3,712 shelter nights. Shelter outreach- the day resource center is located in jessup and is open 3 days a week. The center provides meals, showers, limited laundry, fellowship and other social services to homeless individuals in the howard county route 1 corridor. In fy13, the center served 653 clients.

MAXIMUM LENGTH OF STAY IS 6 MONTHS AND IS DEPENDENT ON THE RESIDENT'S CONTINUED PROGRESS TOWARDS ACHIEVING THE IDENTIFIED GOALS. COMPREHENSIVE SUPPORT SERVICES INCLUDE CASE MANAGEMENT, ACCESS TO MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTIONS TREATMENT, IN-HOUSE EMPLOYMENT SUPPORT PROGRAM, FINANCIAL LITERACY AND PARENTING PROGRAMS, MANDATORY SAVINGS AND DEBT MANAGEMENT, HEALTH SERVICES, ASSISTANCE APPLYING FOR SOCIAL SERVICES AND SOCIAL SECURITY FOR ELIGIBLE PERSONS, AND ASSISTANCE LOCATING PERMANENT HOUSING. TRANSPORTATION AND LIMITED FINANCIAL SUPPORT ARE ALSO AVAILABLE. STAFFING INCLUDES CASE MANAGERS, RESIDENTIAL ASSISTANTS, DRIVERS AND KITCHEN STAFF. VOLUNTEERS ASSIST WITH MEALS, MENTORING, RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES, TUTORING AND FUNDRAISING. IN FY13, THE FAMILY SHELTER SERVED 89 FAMILIES AND PROVIDED 10,999 BEDNIGHTS. THE MEN'S SHELTER SERVED 50 MEN AND PROVIDED 6,497 BEDNIGHTS. THE MAJORITY OF ADULTS IN SHELTER HAVE A MENTAL HEALTH DIAGNOSIS, PHYSICAL DISABILITY OR SERIOUS HEALTH ISSUES, OR AN ADDICTION PROBLEM.
