Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of transitions family violence services is to build safe and healthy families on the virginia peninsula by providing services to adult and child victims of domestic violence. We work to increase awareness by providing education, prevention programming and opportunities for community members to participate in our mission.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Children's services. Children receiving services from transitions family violence services develop coping skills and positive behaviors to break the cycle of violence and become healthy, productive adults. Transitions provides a comprehensive children's program, offering assessment, crisis intervention, supportive counseling (art/play therapy, individual and group counseling) and comprehensive academic, childcare, and psychological support for child victims and witnesses of domestic violence on the virginia peninsula. Nurturing and parenting education programs are also offered. Children receiving services demonstrate appropriate coping skills and reduced trauma, increased positive behaviors and decreased negative behaviors, attend school, complete homework and apply appropriate study skills, use appropriate anger management and conflict resolution skills, and demonstrate elements of good character. Parents receiving services practice nurturing behavior with self and children and use non-violent disclipline techniques with children. In fy12, 198 children received services. 88% of program participants reported increased positive behaviors and decreased negative behaviors in their children.
Activity 3
Outreach services. Clients utilizing transitions' outreach services receive support to live violence-free, self-sufficient lives. Transitions provides a comprehensive outreach program to formerly sheltered and never sheltered victims of domestic violence on the virginia peninsula. Services include information and referral, supportive counseling, legal advocacy, targeted education to underserved populations, systems advocacy, and client access to agency donations. Clients accessing outreach services will receive information and referral, counseling, donations, education, and access to community resources. Formerly and never sheltered clients increase their ability to be self-sufficient and lead violence-free lives. In fy12 3,105 individuals received outreach services. 84% of outreach services participants reported increased knowledge of agency and community resources.
