IRS990/Description0THE VIRGINIA LAW FOUNDATION MADE GRANTS IN SUPPORT OF PROJECTS THAT (1) PROVIDE SERVICES TO IMPROVE THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE; (2) PROVIDE LAW-RELATED EDUCATION; (3) PROMOTE UNDERSTANDING OF THE RULE OF LAW IN AMERICA; (4) PROVIDE LEGAL SERVICES TO THE UNDERPRIVILEDGED; AND (5) PROVIDE PUBLIC SERVICE INTERNSHIPS FOR VIRGINIA LAW STUDENTS. SEE DESCRIPTIONS BELOW.PUBLIC SERVICE:GRANTS WERE PROVIDED TO 8 VIRGINIA LAW SCHOOLS TO SUPPORT 31 FIRST AND SECOND YEAR VIRGINIA LAW STUDENTS WHO GAINED VALUABLE EXPERIENCE IN PUBLIC SERVICE LAW AS THEY INTERNED FOR VARIOUS PUBLIC SERVICE EMPLOYERS THROUGHOUT THE COMMONWEALTH DURING THE SUMMER. THROUGH THIS PROGRAM, STUDENTS WERE SENSITIZED TO THE IMPORTANCE OF PUBLIC INTEREST AND PRO BONO WORK. SEVERAL HUNDRED CLIENT CASES WERE IMPACTED BY THE WORK OF THESE INTERNS.LAW RELATED EDUCATION:ABOUT 250 LAWYERS ATTENDED THE VIRGINIA BAR ASSOCIATION'S CAPITAL DEFENSE WORKSHOP IN RICHMOND IN 2013, RECEIVING SPECIALIZED TRAINING IN CAPITAL LITIGATION AND FORENSIC EVIDENCE. THE TRAINING WAS PROVIDED FREE OF CHARGE FOR ATTORNEYS SEEKING QUALIFICATION FOR CAPITAL DEFENSE CASES.APPROXIMATELY 300 ATTORNEYS, PARALEGALS, GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES, MILITARY PERSONNEL AND COMMUNITY ADVOCATES ATTENDED THE VIRGINIA POVERTY LAW CENTER'S LEGAL AID CONFERENCE IN 2012, RECEIVING TRAINING IN A WIDE VARIETY OF ISSUES AFFECTING THE LOW-INCOME POPULATION IN VIRGINIA. THEIR TRAINING WILL BE APPLIED TO THOUSANDS OF LEGAL AID CLIENTS IN VIRGINIA ANNUALLY.A CONCLAVE ON LEGAL EDUCATIONS PROVIDES A FORUM FOR STAKEHOLDERS IN LEGAL EDUCATION TO REVIEW THE CURRENT STATE OF LEGAL EDUCATION, DISCUSS CURRENT TRENDS AND DEVELOPMENTS AND IDENTIFY AREAS FOR IMPROVEMENT IN THE CONTINUUM OF LEGAL EDUCATION IN VIRGINIA FOR THE NEXT 20 YEARS. THIS MEETING ULTIMATELY BENEFITS THE LEGAL PROFESSION AND CLIENTS.RULE OF LAW:THE RULE OF LAW IS BEING TAUGHT IN MIDDLE SCHOOL CIVICS CLASSES IN MULTIPLE JURISDICTIONS THROUGHOUT THE STATE THROUGH A CURRICULUM/LESSON PLAN DESIGNED BY EDUCATORS AND TAUGHT BY BOTH EDUCATORS AND LAWYERS DIRECTLY IN THE CLASSROOM. THROUGH THIS PROJECT, THOUSANDS OF VIRGINIA STUDENTS AND COUNTLESS OTHERS WILL BECOME BETTER CITIZENS BY HAVING GAINED A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING THAT THE RULE OF LAW IN AMERICA IS THE SOURCE OF THEIR INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS AND THE COLLECTIVE RIGHTS OF ALL CITIZENS. HUNDREDS OF TEACHERS WILL BE ENRICHED BY BEING PROVIDED LESSON PLANS, ACTIVITIES, RESOURCES AND TOOLS TO BECOME MORE EFFECTIVE EDUCATORS. VOLUNTEER LAWYERS AND JUDGES WILL GAIN A GREATER SENSE OF PRIDE IN OUR PROFESSION BY PRESERVING, THROUGH EDUCATION, THE RULE OF LAW FOR GENERATIONS TO COME.THE RULE OF LAW DAY AWARD LUNCHEON IS HELD AT THE VIRGINIA HOLOCAUST MUSEUM. THIS AWARD HONORS AN INDIVIDUAL WHOSE WORK IN LAW PROMOTES THE FUNDAMENTAL FACT THAT THE LAW, REVERENCE FOR IT AND ITS PROPER IMPLEMENTAION FORM THE FOUNDATION FOR FREE AND JUST SOCIETIES. A WORKSHOP AND CLE WAS ALSO HELD IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE LUNCHEON.ACCESS TO JUSTICE:GRANT FUNDS WERE PROVIDED TO AID THE EXPANSION OF PRO BONO LEGAL SERVICES IN IMMIGRATION MATTERS TO UNDERSERVED HISPANIC AND DIVERSE COMMUNITIES IN THE NORTHERN VIRGINIA REGION. AT LEAST 100 CLIENTS WILL BE ASSISTED.FOR ONE WEEK, STUDENTS ARE INTRODUCED TO THE LEGAL PROFESSION BY LIVING ON A COLLEGE CAMPUS AND ATTENDING MOCK CLASSES AND SEMINARS ON TEST TAKING STRATEGIES, THE COLLEGE ADMISSION PROCESS AND CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE LAW PROFESSION. THE STUDENTS MEET WITH LAW PROFESSORS, JUDGES, GUEST LECTURERS AND BAR ASSOCIATION MEMBERS. AT THE END, STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN A MOCK TRIAL. THE INSTITUTE CULMINATES WITH A GRADUATION BANQUET WHERE A PROMINENT AFRICAN AMERICAN MEMBER OR MEMBER OF DIVERSITY OF THE BAR IS THE FEATURED SPEAKER.
