IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0The Mental Health Services staff has been addressing the psychosocial needs of Chicago's LGBT community for nearly three decades by offering counseling, psychotherapy, support groups, and various workshops. Annually, Mental Health staff provide over 6,000 hours of individual, couples, family and group sessions on a sliding-fee scale. Mental Health staff: assess and treat conditions such as depression and isolation; provides critical support during traumatic periods; and, address issues pertaining to building healthy relationships, sexual orientation and identity, self-esteem, and living with HIV/AIDS. Group services include therapy, support, and educational sessions designed to connect and unite LGBT women, men, families, and allies who share similar concerns.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description1In FY2012, COH's Senior Programs served 463 unduplicated seniors, with 57% between the ages of 55 and 64, and 43% 65 years or older. Three times a week, Senior Programs serves meals to its patrons with 150 meals served each week. This ensures seniors are getting nutritious meals on a regular basis and provides a means for our elders to break isolation by socializing with others in a comfortable setting. In addition, we will soon be augmenting this offering with a healthy continental breakfast. In addition, Senior Programs staff provides benefit checkups to assess what services clients may be able to access, as well as numerous referrals to seniors in need of linkage to benefits, medical or mental health care, HIV testing, home health services, or other needs. Senior Programs host a wide variety of opportunities for LGBTQ elders to gather, learn and thrive, including workshops regarding issues such as financial wellness; language classes such as French and Spanish; recreation and fitness activities; access to vibrant arts and culture programs and events, such as concerts, knitting circles, movie nights, and open-cafe Thursdays; and intergenerational activities including a monthly brunch for seniors and youth. In addition, Senior Programs presents a series of special events, including holiday parties, participation in the annual Pride Parade, and other celebrations. Our elder patrons can also avail themselves of our gymnasium for group and individual physical activity. The Senior Programs' model of care places a significant emphasis on wellness activities. These include having volunteer health care professionals, including doctors and nurses, available once a week to meet with patrons; a program called "Ask Your Friendly Pharmacist" which helps elders understand what their medications do and how they should be taken; and conducting well-being phone calls with elders who are home-bound. In addition, COH hosted its second LGBTQ Older Adult Wellness Fair in Chicago in September 2012, where more than 100 attendees were able to access over 40 LGBTQ-affirming vendors, workshops and demonstrations. Senior Programs also offers a Friendly Visitor Program, which provides companionship and friendship to isolated LGBTQ older adults who are homebound or living in a care setting.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description2The Anti-Violence Project at Center on Halsted was created in 1988 inresponse to the growing need for victim assistance for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and HIV-positive (LGBTQH) people. AVP is the only LGBT-specific program committed to addressing violence against and within the LGBTQH community in Illinois. AVP has become the cornerstone of recovery for many LGBTQH victims of hate and bias crimes, domestic violence and sexual assault in the Chicagoland area and across the state.AVP delivers a continuum of victim services - from the moment of anemergency crisis call through ensuing legal issues and efforts to healfrom physical and emotional pain. AVP does this by providing a 24-hourcrisis hotline, case management, individual therapy, courtaccompaniment, legal and medical advocacy, and legal referrals. Inaddition to victim services, AVP provides outreach, education andtrainings to community members, service providers and first respondersto: increase awareness of violence against and within the LGBTQHcommunity; increase the LGBTQH-specific competency of service providersand responders; and, decrease systemic barriers victims may face whenaccessing services and care.Since inception, Center on Halsted has offered legal resources for the LGBTQ community, including information, referrals, workshops and adviceclinics with attorney volunteers. Services include weekly pro-bonolegal clinic staffed by volunteer attorneys, court accompaniment andadvocacy through the Anti-Violence program, and legal educationworkshops on a diverse array of topics including: protecting yourfamily, 2nd parent adoption, domestic partner agreements andtransgender rights. The Center's legal program works closely withpartners including Lambda Legal, AIDS Legal Council of Chicago, andAmerican Civil Liberties Union. By forging strong partnerships withother providers, particularly mainstream providers, the Center providesimportant resources.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description3Volunteers are a critical component to the success of Center on Halsted. Through a variety of capacities across program areas, volunteers increase the ability of the Center to serve our diverse constituency. At the outset, all volunteers attend one of our mandatory bi-monthly orientation sessions. Through these two-hour sessions, and ongoing communication, volunteers learn about opportunities within the Center which match their skills, interests, talents and experiences including special events, youth programming, elders programming, front desk support and administrative support.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description4COH has a strong history of job training, particularly since the opening of our current facility in 2007. After two successful years of providing culinary skills training to 45 young people annually, COH launched the Silver Fork Culinary Job Training Program in November 2010. This is the first professional culinary arts training at COH designed specifically for underserved and at-risk adults. Silver Fork addresses short and long-term vocational needs, and ensures the successful outcomes of our community members while focusing on shortages within the Chicago employment market. Graduates of our Silver Fork program are trained and prepared to enter this growing workforce. Currently, program staff is training their six cohort and plan to consistently run three cohorts per year.

IRS990/Description0State of Illinois AIDS/HIV & STD Hotline: For a total of 19 years, COH has operated the State of Illinois AIDS/HIV & STD Hotline, a free and anonymous service operating daily from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm. The Hotline offers individualized risk assessments, comprehensive referrals, and the latest information about HIV/AIDS and STDs to callers from all over the United States and even from abroad. With a database of 2,600 statewide referral services, Health Educators provide callers with a wealth of information regarding local health, social and support services. Yearly, we reach more than 14,000 diverse callers. HIV Testing and Prevention: COH launched its highly successful HIV Testing and Prevention program in May, 2008. In FY12, we performed 2728 tests (1.4% positivity rate) reaching MSM, HRH, MTF and Spanish-speaking persons. The program provides free, rapid, and confidential HIV testing to clients on an appointment or walk-in basis. Clients who test positive for HIV, or who need additional support services, are linked to internal or external providers. In CY12, new grant funding allowed Center on Halsted expand our HIV testing and outreach services to the most at-risk populations. HIV Support Services: COH offers MSM, MtF, HIV+, and Spanish-speaking individuals who come through our testing program up to eight hours of free, short-term therapy/supportive counseling. This helps newly diagnosed individuals acquire a deeper understanding of their status and transmission risks, and lessens their anxiety. It has also proven to be an effective, safe opportunity for the Health Educator to elicit information about sexual and needle-sharing partners as well as to follow up on referrals to primary care. In FY12, 77 HIV+, high risk HIV negative and potentially high risk negative clients were provided with 212 hours of individual or couples counseling. Clients wanting more long-term mental health treatment can enroll in COH's Mental Health Services, where HIV+ clients are eligible for low-cost or free therapy through our Ryan White Part A grant. Clinical Health Educators also offer five weekly HIV+ support groups, one for 18-34 year olds, two for 35+, one of mixed ages, and one HIV+ Art Therapy Studio Group. The model for the groups was developed after a thorough review of group services already available on Chicago's North Side. Because many groups in our area are open and peer-led, we developed a closed, therapist-facilitated model as an alternative. Group topics include disclosure of HIV status, medication, side effects, symptoms of HIV disease, dating, relationships, sex, safer sex, confidentiality, availability of medical and social services, aging, and substance use. In FY12, 75 unduplicated HIV+ clients were served through seventeen 10-week groups. In CY12, COH launched new risk reduction counseling and online programs targeting high risk adults on the North side of Chicago and high risk youth throughout the city.
