The Summer Mentoring Program provides 4th year high school students with mentors, situational experience and good work practices designed to prepare and to focus the student on personal successes. The mentoring program helps students build self-esteem giving young persons the inner strength to resist negative peer pressure. It also gives the community positive student, resident, and business interaction. The students are paid a stipend after completion of the contract. The program is open to Central Avenue High School Seniors. The promotion of higher education is now a specific goal, the generation of personal and community pride and the braking of self-imposed and cultural barriers are imbedded into the revised program's structure. The program has been well received by the community leadership. New leaders and professionals from the community expressed their interest in their participation as mentors. During 2017, 11 students participated and 6 students completed the program.$0$8,798
The Healthy Quality of Life Program initiative occurred throughout 2017. The mission of this initiative is to continue generating a sustainable "Healthy Quality of Life" for the community. CABA engaged with community organizations, property owners, stakeholders, and more specifically, the Engendering Department of the Unified Government, to consider and identify ways to improve the operative aspects of Central Avenue. CABA helped establish and promote the newest areas of development. CABA dealt with challenges for the 18th Street and Central Avenue intersection and Trolley Park, helped with communicating between the owners and stakeholders of the 7th street and Central Avenue intersection, helped with the creation of safe pedestrian crossings on the Avenue and promoted the unification of the driving speed. CABA also spent time working with other organizations mapping out plans of action for the community parks, in specific, Bethany Park, while promoting health practices by producing a weekly Walking Club (WalkWyCo) and donating exercise equipment for the Park. Approximately 25,000 residents of the community were impacted by this program.$0$8,474
The first annual Day of the Dead event was held on November 4th, 2017. Businesses and organizations are invited to participate in an offerings display contest to celebrate tradition while promoting their services and products. A panel of 5 judges from members of the community will visit each offerings display and select 3 winners. Approximately 5,000 people concentrated on Central Avenue to participate in the celebrations.$0$5,320
La Placita is an open Market at Bethany Park held between the months of May through September. It features vendors, entertainment, and the opportunity for members of the community to connect. La Placita is an open-door venue for community members to explore their ability to produce and commercialize any given product without the pressure of major upfront investment. Within La Placita's operations, each vending start-up is guided and prompted to engage in learning the commercialization of products and services. Product presentation, market analysis and forward planning are imbedded in the process for learning how to build a path to financial success. During 2017, nearly 40 local vendors and organizations took advantage of La Placita at Bethany Park. It served over 7,000 residents while promoting community engagement and the incubation of future businesses for the Central Avenue Commercial Corridor. CABA also hosted the 2017 Central Avenue Parade which included 36 floats, 4 High School Marching Banks, several schools, horse clubs, vintage cars, businesses and private families' floats, 45 local vendors, and nearly 5,000 individuals participated.$0$4,566
