Mission and Program Overview

Mission

When people, land, and community are as one, all three members prosper; when they relate not as members but as competing interests, all three are exploited. By consulting nature as the source and measure of that membership, the land institute seeks to develop an agriculture that will save soil from being lost or poisoned, while promoting a community life at once prosperous and enduring.

Develop a grain agriculture system with the ecological stability of natural systems and a grain yield comparable to that from annual crops.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Line 11B Review of form 990 by governing body

An independent accounting firm prepares and reviews the 990. The 990 is then reviewed by the organization's president, coo and the charity cfo. Any questions and concerns the organization's president, coo and the charity cfo have are addressed and any corrections or clarifications that need to be made are made. The final form 990 with all required schedules is then provided to all voting members of the board prior to filing the 990.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 12C Conflict of interest policy

All conflict of interest forms are reviewed by the coo, governance and nominating committee of the board. If conflicts arise in board meetings, they are addressed at that time and conflicted persons are asked to recuse from discussion and/or voting.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 15A Process to establish compensation of top management official

The President reviews compensation for the organization including members of the Executive Team annually. The Governance and Nominating committee reviews and recommends compensation changes for the President annually.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 15B Process to establish compensation of other employees

In 2023, HR worked with USDA government chart to review compensation for research staff. In 2023, HR worked with Payscale to review compensation for operational staff. Recommendations were made to the Executive Team of the organization. Executive Team finalized and approved compensation recommendations.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 19 Required documents available to the public

Audited financial statements are available on our website www.landinstitute.org and other governing documents, including conflict of interest policy, are available upon request.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A & 15B Process for Determining Compensation

Compensation reviews are performed annually for the president and all other officers. The director of hr reviews the annual updates to the research usda chart and compares to what is budgeted. Compensation budgets are reviewed by the abi committee and approved by the full board. The president's compensation is also reviewed annually by the governance and nomination committee of the board, which uses payscale, as well as other benchmarking tools available to determine and set compensation for the president.
