“"rikers island. In summer and fall 2019, we taught "beats and blues" songwriting workshops to youth offenders in two classes a day, once a week. Music on the inside (moti) reached 100 individuals, providing music education classes in rikers island's facilities for youth and young adults,presenting two classes one day each week for two semesters each year. We worked with professional jazz musicians as teachers and mentors whoj taught the blues, encouraged original songs and put music to the original works created. In moti's current model, incarcerateed individuals in various facilitiees are given the opportunity to apply for the moti music class. Those who do, are given a guitar to work with over a 6- week period which includes weekly 2 hour classes and designated practice times allocated by the facility. At the culmination of each 6-8 week semester, students are featured in a performancee with their teachers and well-known professional musicians. Most recently, arturo o'farrill came to queensboro correctional facility to perform with our students and support them in their songwritng, playing and singing. Moti students are invited to contact moti after release for ongoing lessons. Those that do are given a free guitar and weekly lessons with a master guitarist on zoom. (we're currently trying to identify a space for a weekly in-person group guitar class.)”

We currently teach 4 students in weekly zoom classes. Moti sunday salons. Starting in december 2018, moti held monthly salons featuring well-known jazz artists and leaders in the criminal justice field to cultivate awareness and support. Featured artists in f19 included anat cohen, russell hall, emmet cohen, sheila jordan, catherine russell, wycliffe gordan, vince giordano, marion cowings, jay rodriquez, danny mixon, arturo o'farrill, and moti (in f20, we expanded to edgecombe correctional facility, an interim facility, in washiington heights and now teach in edgecombe and queensboro.)”
