“Next Step Up's Tutorial Program - We provided math, science and reading tutorials to the general student body and provided college entrance exam practice to high school juniors and seniors. This resulted in improved practice scores and comprehension. During our after-school tutorials we help students with homework in math, science, reading and other subjects, assist with college entrance exam practice, help with completing college applications, and more. These services are provided to equip high school students with the tools, skills, and motivation they need to reach their next steps, which are defined as any avenue for advancement, including college, the military, professional school, entrepreneurship, or employment.”

“The Step With You Mentoring Program - The program focuses on character development, academic performance, positive behavior, and conflict management/problem solving skills. The program provided individual and group mentoring to 9th-12th grade students in Macon County, AL. The mentors and mentees met once a week to discuss topics related to the mentees personal development. Monthly group activities were conducted to facilitate bonding. Evaluations conducted showed that students who participated as mentees saw improvements in their academic, social and personal development. Mentors reported an improvement in their leadership and management skills, an expanded professional network, and that they were provided an empowering opportunity to give back to the community.”

“Next Step Ups Career Conversations - These events highlighted engineers, communications experts, airplane pilots and mechanics. Next Step Up held monthly events to highlight career options for students. Students reported a greater understanding of potential career opportunities and several students connected with speakers after the event for further guidance and opportunity. One such event this year featured the Tuskegee Fire Department. The firefighters talked to students about the qualifications for becoming a firefighter and demonstrated how to use the equipment such as the fire trucks. Another example was an event that we held featuring an architect. This engaging series expands the students interest in career opportunities.”
