ART26201's mission is to celebrate and promote the creative and inspirational opportunities in the Buckhannon, West Virginia, community, through the creation and promotion of public and community art.
| Description | Grants | Expenses |
|---|---|---|
| COLONIAL ARTS CENTER REHABILITATION - ART26201 dispersed a grant it received from FirstEnergy Foundation to the City of Buckhannon, WV, to fund the continued renovations of the former historic Colonial Theatre (now known as the Colonial Arts Center) in Buckhannon, WV, so it may be revitalized as a community arts center. ART26201 also dispersed public donated funds to the City of Buckhannon, WV, to pay for material costs of new red, white, and black ceramic facade tile to mimic the previous historic facade. | $5,000 | $10,000 |
| ART IN PUBLIC PLACES PROGRAM: M.I.B. "GETAWAY" GATEWAY - ART26201's latest Art In Public Places program endeavor in progress is a Gray Barker/ Men In Black inspired steel "GETAWAY" gateway to be installed above the southern end of the Traders Alley Arts District in Buckhannon, WV. The artwork celebrates the "Men In Black" books, magazines, and movies, that originated in the early 1950s with local WV author, Gray Barker. Mr. Barker operated the Cinema V movie house (now the Colonial Arts Center) in the 1970s, which anchors the northern end of the Traders Alley Arts District. True to Barker's UFO passion, the Cinema V brought many science fiction blockbuster movies to Buckhannon like "Star Wars" (1977) and "Planet Earth" (1974). A 1960 Chrysler Windsor was chosen for this installation because of its "spaceship" styling and vintage aesthetic. Two mannequins will be permanently placed in the front seat, dressed in black suits and black sunglasses, to pay homage to "Agent J" and "Agent K" of the "Men In Black" movie franchise. | $600 | $7,559 |
| ART IN PUBLIC PLACES PROGRAM: TRADERS ALLEY PAVEMENT MARKING EVENT - Ashley Kyber designed an organic, 600-foot-long painting on the asphalt pavement which playfully reinterprets highway standards and reflects the less rigid rules of Traders Alley in Buckhannon, WV. The ART IN PUBLIC PLACES Program work utilizes West Virginia Department of Highways approved white and yellow traffic paint, as well as a few highlights in red. On June 4, 2021, Kyber led a hands-on painting workshop with 20 youth participants, ages 14-18, to execute the largest artwork in the Traders Alley Arts District. The free-flowing forms extend the entire length of Traders Alley, from Main Street to Jawbone Park, and also branch out Milkman Lane to Spring Street. This project was made possible by a partnership among ART26201; Upshur County Schools; the City of Buckhannon; and the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History's Rural Youth Engagement through Public Art grant program. | $3,960 | $5,517 |
| 6TH ANNUAL YOUNG FILMMAKERS CAMP - ART26021 hosted their 6th Annual YOUNG FILMMAKERS CAMP at LASCAUX Micro-Theater in Buckhannon, WV, July 26-30, 2021. Seventeen students participated in the 5-day camp and created short films based on scripts developed there. Upon conclusion of the camp, a premiere was held at LASCAUX Micro-Theater where students, friends, and family were invited to see participants' completed films. | $0 | $2,444 |
| COLONIAL ARTS CENTER: M.I.B. GALLERY EXHIBITS - ART26201 hosted ten art exhibits, all free and open to the public, at the M.I.B. GALLERY in the Colonial Arts Center in Buckhannon, WV: [1.) Deanna Gillum, 2.) Robert Villamagna, 3.) Second Annual Upshur Youth Art Exhibit, 4.) Buckhannon-Upshur Camera Club Landscape Exhibit, 5.) 20th Century Masters, 6.) Evan Boggess, 7.) Priscilla Roggenkamp, 8.) Robby Moore, 9.) Chuck Olson, and 10.) Jessie McClanahan & Nevada Tribble] | $0 | $1,797 |
| 1ST ANNUAL YOUNG STORYTELLERS CAMP - ART26201 hosted the 1st ANNUAL YOUNG STORYTELLERS CAMP for high school students, June 14-15, 2021, at LASCAUX Micro-Theater in Buckhannon, WV, focusing on creative storytelling, performance, and becoming a champion "liar." The day camp celebrates Gray Barker's (of "Men In Black" fame) salesmanship and his ability to embellish the "facts" of a mundane situation to pique the public's interest. Behind the curtain, Barker was the ultimate story manipulator and left a legacy of unexplained phenomena embedded in the American psyche. Jason Young, James Froemel, and Doug Van Gundy led the camp of nine students, who were mentored in the art and craft of storytelling, and they drew upon local histories to transform those stories in the creation of their own epic tales. | $0 | $1,184 |
